360 Lashes in Saudi for OAP

RE: 360 Lashes in Saudi for OAP
Meh, the guy knew it was illegal and did it anyway; if you're not willing to suffer the penalty, don't commit the crime.
Yes it may be an injustice in our estimation but it isn't our country.
If the bottle had been planted by the cops (which isn't unheard of) he might have a case beyond that this is just so much whining.

Cultral relativism belongs in the bin. How is giving a guy in his 70s 360 lashes both just and fair in any sense of those words?

What this is is exactly as min said, a double standard whereby foreigners in Saudi are convicted with overly harsh sentences for minor transgressions which are routinely committed by Saudis. Forget carrying a bottle of wine, what about countless murders and rapes committed against de facto slave labour by Saudis both home and abroad?

It's utter nonsense and needs to be confronted.

Interesting that it was "home made" and not alcohol bought at the many Saudi holiday resorts that sell alcohol.

This line of logic is faulty.

Do you blame the Jews for what happened in Nazi Germany? Would you have told them they knew it was a crime to be Jewish in Germany and that they should have known better than to stay there?

An injustice is an injustice. No matter what part of the world you live in.

This isn't a crime like murder. It's a crime that flat out should not be punishable by 360 lashes, let alone punished at all.

Why does it take a white guy getting a sentence like this for people to actually talk about it? Saudi Arabia have been doing this to their own citizens, nobody cares, in fact we even invite them to head a UN Human Rights panel (a disgrace). It says a lot about The West when we don't have anything to say until it's one of our own getting the lashes.

I'm also pretty much done with the "This is not true Islam!" argumnent that I'm sure "moderate" Muslims and liberals are throwing around right now. I couldn't care less if this is Islamic or un-Islamic, because the bottom fucking line of the matter is it's wrong whichever it is.

360 lashes, unless the guy wielding the whip is exceptionally skilled, would likely be a death sentence for someone in their 20's. I have to wonder if they'll continue whipping the poor bastard after he's dead.

Death for a fucking bottle of wine. These 13th century barbarians need to go fuck themselves!

The news of vote trading is sickening and should have received more attention. Britain shouldn't be on the human rights committee either. There are very few countries that are a shining example of human rights sadly. Britain isn't as bad as Saudi or the United States but Britain has done lots of bad things.
