We may as well have spent that money elsewhere, for all the good that it did both us, and those foreign countries. Were it not for the remarkable ineffectiveness of that strategy I doubt that there'd be any news to report on it at all.
Throwing money and mercs at a problem rarely solves the problem..unless the problem is how to best separate people from their money and employ said mercs. Precisely the problem our strategy was designed to solve, btw, lol.
You're talking about military expenditure in training another nations army as if it were the same thing as military expenditure on aggressive maneuvers.
Whether the reason for the initial force was justified or not; it happened. Leaving them with an untrained military to deal with the resulting discord would be a death sentence and likely give rise to further conflicts. Whether the attempt worked or not; doing nothing was not an option.
Hence "may as well have spent that money elsewhere"......eh?

Except that we already possessed that hindsight beforehand. It's not as if we didn't have good reason and vast historical precedent telling us that this plan wouldn't work...and it's not as if no one mentioned that before we dove in.
Hence, again, we may as well have spent that money elsewhere..perhaps trying something that might work, rather than something that reason and history resoundingly tell us will fail. That -was- the news, even then.....and if we'd managed to pretend, for a single moment, that we had a brain in our heads...it wouldn't be the news now....but it is, because we didn't.
I don't watch the program, their overall journalistic integrity isn't something I'm privy to - but here, in this....you seem to be aiming your frustration at the wrong people. No one suggested that we do nothing, it's what we did, in spite of what we know now -and- then, that is being criticized.

The young Turks are not a news organization. It's like saying you hate flula because he misrepresents idioms.

I unfollowed any news source from facebook that just uploads negative crap all day. I find that BBC generally has nice stuff going through my news feed. NPR is very nice. The richard dawkins foundation has a lot of interesting science articles. I also like ted talks. I'm trying to get into C span. But yeah as a rule of thumb, news sources that post a ton of propaganda like the shit on MSNBC like the young turks is probably just gonna be crap that makes you wanna kill yourself.
