Imagine a motorcycle.
When we turn the accelerator the motorcycle moves forward.
Why does the motorcycle move forward?
The motorcycle moves forward because the motorcycle was designed to move forward when someone turn the accelerator.
Now imagine yourself.
When you walk forward you move forward.
Why do you move forward when you walk towards that direction?
We move forward when we walk towards that direction because we were designed to move forward when we walk towards that direction.
Designed by who? I honestly have no idea
You can relate this example with literally everything that happens in our daily life

How do you know what will be discovered in the future? Scientists have hypotheses that might explain, for instance, gravity. We may well learn why gravity exists once they are tested.

But now you're forgetting a couple of things: firstly, our neighbor planets largely do share our composition of heavy minerals, and secondly, gravity (there's that word again!) will tend to sort the materials of the solar system from heaviest to lightest outward from the source of the gravity, in this case our Sun. The fact that that is what we actually see helps to confirm our current understanding of gravity, by the way.
It's quite obvious that it is impossible to discover that.

You're simply stating that we were designed. We have very good evolutionary models of how we came to be just the way we are. Our legs move forwards because we send electrical impulses from our brains instructing them to move forward. It's not the same as a motorcycle, of which we have countless examples of it actually being designed. They didn't evolve, at least not in the same way.
I'd seriously suggest studying evolution in much more detail.
I think you're making assumptions about agency, that there must always be a reason behind everything. The problem with that is there must be a reason behind the reason, and so on.

I know where you're coming from Pooley.
The answer is "Nature is our blind designer".
She designs squillions of silly things that don't work. What happens? They die off. Only those species who were capable of surviving their environment prospered.
It might look like design, but that's the cheat's answer! Nature has been playing the lottery for billions of years. The odds of her NOT coming up with a win in that time is, well, like winning the lottery...

Whenever I see a cute squirrel hopping from branch to branch, I have to think of the millions of poor proto-squirrels who had to fall off and break their necks in order for today's optimized squirrels to evolve. It's heartbreaking, really.
