Anderson's a cool last name and, frankly, for professional reasons, people know me by that name.
Yeah, I imagine intercom awkwardness after you've married and gotten divorced a few times -
"Dr. Anderson to OR5! Erm, Dr. Fluglhuber to OR4. I repeat: Dr. Smith to OR5! Calling Dr. Anderson!"

I ask because once all my immigration stuff goes through, I'm planning on changing my surname to my wife's maiden name, for no particular reason other than I happen to like her surname more than my own, and I'm always a fan of breaking with tradition when there's no real reason for the tradition.
My wife's female cousin just got married to her wife, and they decided to take the wife's name. I guess it works the same for men marrying men? Either way, it would be interesting to know what people think, whether you know people who did non-traditional things with their surnames after marrying.
I don't plan to ever get married again, but if I do I won't be changing my last name. My last name matches my children's last names and that's kind of important to me. As far as what other people do, it doesn't really matter much to me, but I do smile a little when I see people breaking this tradition.

Not really, it's pathetic to be ashamed of your own name - no matter how "terrible" it is.
And I don't know why you say I'm terrible - since when am I a sexist? I'm interested in men's rights (not that this has to do with rights, it's just a tradition of marriage) of course, but I'm no sexist!!

I didn't say you're a sexist, actually. But you trot out traditions and basically attack men who decide different from tradition as less worthy and weak, all the while mumbling about mens rights (odious as that crowd is in my eyes, wtf has that got to do with last name choices). For all that, you temporarily got that label

Because traditions have value. I'm not the one who actually said that Tib's only valid reason for changing his name is if he's a timid cuckold type, FYI, all I did was agree with the comment.
But I'll say this, if I have children I'd like to give them only one name. I've often wished to only have one name myself. Taking away the surname in my view is as strong an opposition to classism that I know.

I don't get your last paragraph. What do you mean by only one name, and how does classism come in? Sorry, maybe I'm a bit slow today.

I'm seriously confused. What the fuck does it matter? It's your name, you can do what you want with it. Traditions are silly.

No traditions are what keep you from being an artist in creating your own life. I mean, really, who wants to go to all the trouble of being themselves in every moment. [/sarcasm]
