Atheism simply requires a suspension of belief; of course, there are some who equate belief in god with belief in Santa Claus and that's just fine, given the limitless views of god and the nearly limitless sets of beliefs about god, most of which are contradictory. With respect to theists, why not just "suspend judgment" with respect to the existence of god? You'll simply be calling a spade "a spade".
