Give me one good reason why I should place restrictions imposed by your or his religion on how I should live. Even if your god were to personally come down and tell me to my face what his rules are, I'd still tell him to fuck off. This is even supposing he was real. And if he was real, given what he's allowed me to be put through in my life, he can heartily kiss my ass, right in the crack. We all do it, whether we use the words "sin/sinner" or not, is just a matter of semantics. Let me use some hypothetical examples to make this simpler to grasp. I don't think many of us would have trouble making the distinction between drinking alchoholic beverages responsibly and full-blown, bottle of Jack Black a day alcoholism. The former is recreational and social; the latter destroys lives, careers, marriages, families, etc. Now, is it possible for a person who enjoys an occasional glass of wine or pint of beer to LOVE the alcoholic who is being destroyed by drink while hating the addiction to alcohol which is destroying his or her loved one? IOW, I don't hate alcohol. I drink it myself sometimes. I don't hate the alcoholic who is a beloved member of my family. But I do hate the alcoholism which is destroying my loved one and my family. I don't hate alcohol; I hate the disordered use of alcohol that results from addiction to it. Make sense? Could I walk through a similar scenario with sex? Sure. I don't hate sex. I have sex myself sometimes. I don't hate the child pornography addict who is a beloved member of my family. But I do hate the child pornography which destroyed my parents' marriage and my family. I don't hate sexuality; I hate the disordered acts of sexuality called child pornography. Similarly, what Cath-y is saying is: I don't hate the homosexual; I hate the disordered acts of homosexuality.
From a meta perspective, I find it both odd and amusing that Christians regularly start threads like this and the ones about NDE fueled atheist conversions as though they're somehow going to sway us (back) over to god. "Let's use people who were once like them, or people they otherwise support to weaken their resolve!" But, the thing is, actual skeptics aren't swayed by anecdotes. Testimony, which is what religion relies on to spread the power/glory/grace/goodness/whatever of god doesn't work on us. We need data. We need things that can be measured and tested. Anything else is a waste of time, especially when, in the case of the NDEs, things can either be explained by a dozen or more mundane causes or by the person simply being a liar.
In this case, a gay Catholic is okay with celibacy. Who fucking cares? He's not the spokesman for the nonexistent gay hive mind. I mean, yeah, cool story, bro, but it doesn't really matter to me that this guy chose celibacy. I'm not Catholic and his opinion doesn't mean much in a society that largely is for gay marriage, adoption, etc.
