I totally think you can do it, Rob. I like the mix of silly and serious; I just think you need some branding, even if it's just a small logo in the corner or you could write a cute little ditty for the beginning and end. I can edit your theme for you, if you decide to make one- I'm pretty good with audio production. I also think you should have a plan that you update periodically to keep you on track. Like:

Monday- record video of monkeys flying out of my butt and edit. Upload at (whatever the best time to upload is).

Wednesday- record video of *something serious* and edit. Upload at (whatever the best time to upload is).

Saturday- blah blah blah blah.


Then, if you want to make little videos in between, you can, but you can manage people's expectations with a plan- you can even put in a little tag: "coming Tuesday: monkeys fly out of my butt!"

"Branding" is a good word. I had neglected to comment that most videos I watch seem to have an opening and closing. Jingle, graphics, whatever. Watch those links and play around with the branding idea. And at all times make sure you have a good mic to use. Audio is essential. One remedy is, if you are to be away from the camera (say in the martial arts video), just do some sort of narration overdub instead of talking to us from whatever distance that was.

Wow, I only expected a few anonymous votes to see if I had a chance (that didn't work out ) but you guys have been great!

The advice, suggestions and constructive criticism are really excellent. I'll give all your comments some thought. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up, it's just an idea for now, but I feel so passionately about these subjects that I feel it's something I could work towards.

I should have mentioned already, my YouTube handle is robvalue, so feel free to check out my stuff. I have a weird mixture of videos at the moment, some better than others. I'd probably start a brand new channel if I ever did this for real, and few if any if the ones I've already made would be put across.

Right now I've got serious vids, stupid vids, playing the organ, my pets, and a few other oddballs. Oh, and the Never Ending Story of course!

I have no money for equipment or anything at the moment, and probably not quite enough energy, but it's something for me to work towards.

This is a little song I made a while ago, but it's obviously a ripoff parody so I don't know if it would cut it as original enough as a theme.

I think you're fantastic, both your funny and your serious videos.

I think the only common theme (besides an intro and outro, and background music) that is shared between all successful Youtubers is: They all talk loudly or even shout. Some of them are only reasonably loud though. And they often put a voice on or exaggerate their own voice.

Do you think I should talk more loudly than I generally do in my videos? I am by nature rather softly spoken. I could come up with a weird voice I suppose, but I don't know if I could sustain that. I prefer being myself as much as possible.

Definitely don't put on a voice. Only talk louder if you feel comfortable. I agree you should just be yourself. I was only saying what I notice commonly in successful Youtubers. I don't want you to change, you're epic just the way you are. Success not being yourself isn't worth it anyway. Always be yourself.
