For the most part, I think they are bogus, however, products that make use of Keratin, actually help. Keratin are proteins, which are the building blocks for hair, nails and skin. If you go to a salon and ask for a Keratin treatment, they will use product that has Keratin in it, leave it on your head and then wash it out. The Keratin reaches the cortex of the hair strand and helps to keep it strong. This is especially useful if someone has continuously chemically treated their hair, whether by color or by chemical texturizing (perms and relaxers). The normal pH in hair, for example, is between 4 pH and 6pH. When you chemically alter the hair strand, you are increasing the pH to a potential high of 14 pH. In order to restore the hair to a healthier state, Keratin is used.
Store bought products are never as good as salon products or even prescribed products. So, for me, knowing what I have learned in school, I would no longer purchase products unless they are of salon quality. You really do get what you pay for.
I would ask your aunt how she feels about those studies with regards to store quality products. She would probably tell you that prescription or even salon based skin care products are far superior to what you find in a place that sells box hair color or below-grade skin care products.
That's not to say that some of them can't work, but if so, the effects usually are only temporary and they won't give you the same results as better products. I'll be in Advanced skin care once I get to the senior level. I don't know what curriculum I will be going into first, but I can certainly ask the instructor for the senior level students what she thinks and let you know.

I knew it!

Her office would participate in hand lotions "studies" were a person signs up to participate, has their hands examined, and get $50. They seemed totally sketchy to me. They're not set up like legit studies, it doesn't matter whether you use the product or not, you just sign up, go into the office a couple times and get paid - and the sponsor company can claim that they've tested their product. :S
Hence my suspicions about skin care products in general, and especially the really expensive ones.

Lol that's not a study. It sounds like some business taking advantage of grant money. A dermatologist can tell you what's good to use on skin and what helps to improve the texture.
By the way, I passed my practicals tonight.

Remember girls, you're not buying skin care products.
You're buying hopes and dreams! And you can't put a price on that!
(Well, that was the quickest $50 I ever made! Thanks Avon)

Academic grade for my final pre-salon curriculum: 95.47%
Attendance percentage for that curriculum: 100.50%
Made the 90/90 club and was one of two people with perfect attendance.
My first senior salon curriculum: State laws and regulations. We'll have three exams and no practicals (no mannequin testing)
I love learning about the law so this curriculum should be easy for me. I do have a ton of studying to do though!
