When some asshole I've taken the time to patiently explain what evolution is and is not, following their initial batshit crazy claim about what science supposedly "really" is, and they reply with something like, "From a plant you get a plant, from a donkey you get a donkey and from a human being you get a human being."

The thing that pisses me off about this kind of "objection" is that evolution agrees with them. From a (general description) you get a (same general description). They are obviously under the delusion that evolution states something different. Of course the offspring is going to be extremely similar to the parents. But the description we give a thing such as "a donkey" is entirely arbitrary, so to say it's "the same" is a kind of equivocation fallacy. It's not identical, it's just extremely similar. You can't use labels to halt incremental change.

They just can't grasp the timescales involved, I suppose. It's these continual objections to positions no one actually holds that is annoying.

Religion doesn't anger me so much as it makes me sad. I see it as largely inevitable. People will believe religious claims, and from their perspective the reasons they have make sense. I just don't know what the answer is.

Thing that annoys me is the assumption by theists that I haven't considered the arguments/was never a theist/haven't done any reading/that im just rebelling against god or that I'm simply some sort of lost soul that doesn't know what he's doing.

IDK, in Dark Souls 3 my "faith" has enabled me to summon godly lightning bolts, cast fast regeneration on my wounds, and with a little "intelligence" some awesome pyro and dark spells too. ;P

It annoys me even more when they try to do this to a high-profile atheist. We can be pretty certain that Christopher Hitchens isn't just going through a phase.

Personally I don't give a shit. They do it to everyone, and even to call them high profile is missing the mark. They're just people expressing their opinion like everybody else. I don't view them as any kind of authority, since, looking at my first post here, I'm not a member of any kind of community. The fact that I'm an atheist enabled me to be an individual. I didn't need anyone to tell me why I'm an atheist, general science did that just fine, and I certainly don't need anyone to confirm my atheism. General science does that job just as fine.
