Welcome aboard, btw.

Agnostic is a class of unbeliever.  I don't believe that there is a God.  But I don't affirmatively disbelieve that there is God.

The bolded sentence is the definition of an atheist.

But hey, nobody can force you to call yourself anything; you can use whatever label you feel comfortable with.  It's just that when you're talking about the concepts and ideas behind the words it's important to be clear.  From the words that you've used, I would call you an agnostic atheist (like most people here).  That means you don't accept the claim "A god exists" but you also DONT make the claim "A god does not exist."

Exactly. It's just a word. A description of a state of mind. A useful shorthand.

Some people don't like the word; personally I'm more than happy to take on the label, to support others who are making the transition. And hopefully to shatter the misconceptions.

Maybe it comes down to your source.

My source says they (atheist and agnostic) are two different things.

I want to be convinced totally that there is not a God.

How could you possibly know such a thing?

Well, again, we're more concerned with the concepts behind the terms you're using.  Atheism is just 'lacking a belief in god.'  Some people use the word "dis-believe," which I don't like because it's a muddy term that some say means "actively affirming the inverse" while other say it is interchangeable with "lack of belief."

It's a weird situation because there really isn't a singular term for the position "I believe there are no gods."  Some people use the term "strong atheist" or "gnostic atheist," but I think those are problematic as well in my opinion.

Atheism is a response to a single question: "Do you believe that a god exists?"  That's it.  No other question is addressed other than that one.

The question "Do you believe that god DOESN'T exist?" is a different question, which is why I am not totally happy with the use of 'atheist' to answer that question.

As an agnostic atheist, here are my answers to the questions.

"Does a God exist?" -->  I don't think it can be known/I don't know.  --> Agnostic.
"Do you believe that a God exists?" -->  No, I don't have evidence to lead me to that conclusion.  --> Atheist.

"Does a God NOT exist?" --> I don't think it can be known/I don't know. --> Agnostic.
"Do you believe that God does NOT exist?" --> No, I don't have evidence to lead me to that conclusion. --> ???

There isn't really a term that describes that last answer.  Because I would not accept the statement "A god exists," but I also wouldn't accept the statement "No gods exist," because I don't think either statement can be verified. Until we find a word to describe someone who actively asserts that "No gods exist," it's going to continue to be a muddy situation. Which is why there's half a dozen posts per month confusing the meanings of agnostic and atheist Tongue

Arrogant theists? Or arroganttheists?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

You do know that the principle atheist position is not that "there is not a god", right?

@Agnostic
Not unless they understood your standards....and could possess such knowledge themselves, or..failing that...I guess, unless you were really gullible.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
