Not really, cut-rate contractor using whatever he had on hand / compound jobs. Pics -would- help though.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
I'm thinking of going completety wireless but I don't think you can do that w/o a contract plus I dont like how they slow down my data on my pre pay cell. I don't want to end up with the same crap on my laptop because I use it tons per day.
I was speaking to the apparent contradiction between "direct line" and different colored pairs. Obviously there's a splice in the line somewhere. Maybe more than one.
Shoddy contractor or typical homeowner work, pick one.
What do the yellow and black wires in a home telephone jack do?

The guy who came to "fix" the jack might have ripped the splice apart when he was stripping the wire. That'd explain it just as easily as mice. I love little household mysteries like these.
Moral of the story: You can't pay anyone, anymore, for the kind of quality work you'd do yourself on your own home.

If it is just two wires and all you have to do is match them up from the interface box to the jack then why do they have that voltage meter/phone tester? Shouldn't it work with a new Jack just by matching the two wires?
It wasn't a contractor it was the phone cable company itself. Unless they sub contract but they use company vehicles.

Checks the strength/clarity of the signal. You never know.
(yes, it should work, you should be fine without one)

for the most part polarity doesn't matter on phone lines, but there are a few older phones with LED indicators and they are particular about red to red and green to green (or the new stylish and fashionable blue and orange and stripey shit they use now)
hell, the local actual telephone guy in my area has never done an install 'correctly' in the whole time I've known him The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
