Some people omit some of the steps or get them mixed up.  They have to be followed exactly as specified or else it won't work.  Maybe the elders skimped on the oil or got the wrong kind of oil.  It won't work if someone else besides the sick person calls the elders.

Maybe the kid was so righteous that God wanted to save him from further trouble and blessed him with an early physical death.  It was just his time to go.  You'll get over it.

Yes, I blame mental illness of the parents over the child's death, because merely being a christian hasn't kept most parents from getting their children medical attention when needed. I don't think the religion by itsself is to blame for this much extreme behavior. There has to be other contributing factors.

If an adult refuses medical treatment on religious grounds, that's fine, it's just evolution in action. If they refuse treatment for someone who is unable to make the decision themselves then that's assault at the very least, possibly murder
