In the bad old days, rape victims used to be publicly identified by the media. Thank goodness those days are (for the most part) gone.

It's not exactly a mystery that publicly shaming the victims leads to under reporting.  I doubt that wasn't known in the bad old days.

The way victims tend to be treated in the courtroom - even these days - is bad enough.

And in this case, there were eyewitnesses to the crime and the rapist was actually convicted, (which is infinitesimally rare) and this happens anyway. I will choose to be optimistic about it and see the fact that basically everyone is outraged by this man and his father and the light sentence, and that the victim was able to so eloquently state her mind to the rapist and is getting the support of the public.
It's one of those rare cases where she isn't universally blamed or doubted. The rapist swears she wanted it, the court and the rapist blame alcohol, but the public isn't buying it. This is an undeniable, glaringly obvious example of rape culture with a good healthy dose of white privilege thrown in, and it's basically impossible to deny.

It occurs to me that I've done plenty of partying and yet somehow I've managed to not rape anyone.

Clearly one of us is doing it wrong.

In my late teens I'd party every weekend and don't recall any guys getting drunk and raping anyone.

I speak for myself that when I get drunk enough to lose my reasoning like that, I can't get it up even with consent. Not even viagra works in those instances because when I get drunk really get drunk. I can wager some cocaine was there too as it conteracts th alcool.

You don't have to have an erection. As was the case here, the rapist penetrated the victim with something other than a penis.

There's a meme going around which I rather agree with. Whenever anyone says the name "Brock Turner" in a comment or reply, they must immediately follow it with "THE UNAPOLOGETIC STANFORD RAPIST."

But yeah, this entire case is a sad farce of what the justice system is supposed to do, and if anyone needed somehow more proof that money can get you lighter sentencing, then it's the case of Brock Turner, THE UNAPOLOGETIC STANFORD RAPIST.

That's the walking turd who got away with six months for raping a girl behind a dumpster, isn't he? Wonder what they had dished out if he happened to be a black kid from Detroit. I guess I'd bet anything I have on the sentence not being six months.

This whole thing makes me sick. If it was just Brock being the disgusting excuse of a human being it would be sick by itself but to add how disgusting his father and the judge are just add to the fact. I want to say I can't believe it is happening but I can. I can so easily. I know that parents usually will defend their child to the end but there are times when you have to acknowledge your child is a sick fuck. I could even see if all he was doing was denying his son did these things. Instead he admits it and claims it wasn't a big deal. 20 minutes of action. I actually hate him just as much as Brock for the one sentence. To think that this man actually believes rape is getting action... And then there is the judge. He represents everything that is wrong with America. I want his name to go public as well. I want him to be trashed just like Brock. I want every time any of these three disgusting men walk out of their house they are targeted.

The only silver lining in all of this is that she was unconscious. I understand not knowing what happened is scary but I can promise you remembering is far worse. Thank goodness she can't remember.

I've no doubt the sentence would have been 20x longer at least. Six months is a fucking joke - and he won't do the full six months.

Why don't we castrate rapists? Seems we just throw them in jail for a short amount of time, put them on a register when they get out and that's it. No actual punishment.

I think castration would be cruel and unusual.. and it wouldn't really stop them from committing crimes in the future except for rape (maybe). Just enforce the laws better and equally, and throw this guy in the clink for 40 years.
