I'd say there's a huge difference between a chemical alteration as a result of stopping doing something vs a chemical alteration as a result of forcing something to be done.
I don't know if you're playing devils advocate here. I always have a really hard time imagining there are people who really believe that physically harming someone is ever an acceptable form of punishment.
I'm really not playing Devil's advocate here. I don't know where I stand on the issue and seek rational explanation. Part of me thinks, if chemical castration has no long-term effects, I'm fine with it, but another part of me thinks that taking out a person's sexuality is pretty drastic. This is why my posting in this thread has waffled so much.
I'm trying to reason my way through the weed-patch, and it ain't easy.
They chemically castrated Alan Turing for being gay. Two years later he killed himself. I'm not against severe punishments for rapists, nor even for throwing away the key if there's no chance of rehabilitation.
But chemical castration is simply cruelty masquerading as justice. As much as is possible, emotion needs to be removed from the justice system, in order that the needs of the whole of society are best served.

The "war on drugs" goes as far back as J Edgar Hoover. Once the untouchables and the repeal of prohibition broke the back of the likes of Capone, Edgar was casting around for a new demon to protect his FBIs funding stream, and hit upon cannabis as a solution, renaming it marijuana and imputing whole hordes of demonic Mexucans were importing the drugs to sully and corrupt the pure and honest WASP population of the US. Everything after that was a continuation of what Hoover started.

Hell, the first sign that the War on Drugs wouldn't work came decades earlier with Prohibition. Literally the only thing it does is create black markets, gangs, violence, and needless, arbitrary prison sentences.
