Love the Lord your God with all your heart ?
RE: Love the Lord your God with all your heart ?
You used the zombie virus because it's good shorthand for the dehumanizing way your religion makes you see -anyone-.  It seemed, to you, to fit - and it does.  But, recall your own words...and apply them to your own statements.

if a zombie-
Quote:lives their life morally, helps his loved ones, doesn't hurt anyone, supports charity, and does good works...
Fuck him, he's still a zombie...... ratatatatatatatatat.

So sayeth the lord.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I don't see the problem with that, if that's were we belong.  Accountability is a thing.  I thought we were talking about redemption, seems like were just talking about avoiding punishment.

Quote:The problem with most modern people no matter what they believe, first and foremost everyone thinks he is a 'good guy.'

So?  Are you going to tell modern people how they should all feel about themselves, from your lofty perch in the superstitions of the distant past?  Have fun.

Just an observation sport...

If everyone thinks he is a 'good guy' and if we all have diametrically opposed world views, then someone is wrong about being a 'good guy.'

Or is it your belief that the Orlando shooter and his victims should both be held up as heroes?

Know, that they literally both are being held up as heroes. it just depends on what part of the world your in.

It's not my fault that you can't grasp the nuance of subjective moral value judgements, such as the nature of heroism. Drich. Maybe, if you put down your bible, it would just come to you, like it does for everyone else?

o/9 on the godwin.

No explanation required, I'm familiar with the tendency to avoid the comments and instead try to associate them with some group you hope is commonly disparaged.

It's the observation of a simple fact, moral value judgements vary between people, cultures, and times. Thjat means that people simply are heroes and villains...and they aren't made any less so by my belonging to one camp or the other in that assessment. Or, to dumb it down...just because I think someones a piece of shit, doesn't mean they aren't or can't be a hero. My opinions don't have the ability to do that, and neither do yours.

I hear what you are saying with respect to subjective life experiences, including moments of personal transcendence. Do you suppose that some kinds of things, like first principles, are obvious to reason? I'm thinking here of something like the PNC.

I tend to distrust the notion of self-evidence. Our brains take many short cuts in reasoning things out and it is never clear from within our minds whether the path taken is just such a short cut or not. Ultimately, since we evolved our brains, everything should be on the table. The PNC is a principle which holds only in certain types of logics. Is there such a thing as a 'natural' logic or are they all essentially arbitrary with classical logic appealing to us because it mirrors the way we think? I would say the PNC is sound, but that 'feeling' that I get when I contemplate it is just another evolved short cut. The reason why I have that feeling about the PNC is buried in my subconscious.

I cannot take skepticism that far. I trust in the efficacy of reason and believe that reality is intelligible.

(June 12, 2016 at 4:52 pm)Jörmungandr Wrote: Love... perhaps the greatest mystery of all.  Is it a feeling, or is it a choice?  The greatest commandment says to love God with all your heart.  This would seem to imply that love is a choice, that we can choose to love or not love God.  Those who advocate that love is a choice talk of choosing to commit to the one you love and engage in loving acts towards the loved one, but do these same choices apply to loving a disembodied spirit?  Loving somebody with all your heart and mind and soul seems to speak to love as a feeling.  Does the heart or soul choose?  Is it possible to choose to "love God with all your heart and soul and mind"?

Love, in my view, is essentially sacrifice. It's my personal belief that love can easily be determined by the tendency or willingness of one to give up what is of benefit to themselves, for the benefit of another or others. Our love for our children is demonstrated by our willingness to give up or forgo our own dreams and aspirations at times, and even our lives if necessary. One of the more obvious ways such sacrifice is observed towards one's significant other is through fidelity (again, my opinion), as demonstrated by the willingness to forgo nailing other people, even though you absolutely want to. We give the ones we love our time, our resources, and willingly sacrifice our own desires, comforts, and needs  at times, in order to make the lives of those we care for more bearable...Blah, blah, blah, so on and so forth.

Bottom line, if one isn't willing to give up anything of significance (whether they actually end up having to or not), I would question if what what is being felt it actually love (by my own definition). At first thought, I would say that the willingness to sacrifice is most certainly a choice, but I suppose people do feel compelled to naturally love and give of themselves to certain individuals, seemingly as an act outside of their will. Parent/child relationships in particular come to mind (though not all of them).

As far as the God angle's concerned, I'm afraid I can't offer much insight. I can't love what I can't see or know to be real. God is just an abstract, imaginary, thing to me; an idea. Giving up/sacrificing anything to an idea seems quite insane to me, but loads of people do it. I suppose it's because they believe they're getting much, much more in return.

*DISCLAIMER: I should probably mention that I am by no means an expert on matters of love.

I mean, I get 10-15 ladies a day lining up outside my house for a little Robaction, but I politely decline them all.
