The Election is Rigged (I'm Going To Lose)

I think his main goal is to bind some disgruntled know-nothing segment of the electorate to the name trump, and through them create a trump political family dynasty.  He probably has the Kennedy family, or even the bush or Clinton family in mind.  But unlike these other families, which, even the Bushes, all at some point had demonstrated positive outlook for the republic, outstanding public service, professional political skill, or impressive policy mastery with which to found political dynasties,  trump seem to be totally cynical and regard greasy fortune and pure demoguagary of the crudest kind as sufficient basis for establishment of political dynasty in America.   Even the unscrupulous bootlegger and Nazi sympathizer Joseph Kennedy Sr had sufficient respect for the American republic and the deserts of the American electorate to not run himself, but give his offspring the necessary training and experience to pursue a proper public political career.

I don't think he has nearly the money or revenue he says he does. He has obviously inflated his net worth and his revenue disclosures have tried to pass off gross revenue as net revenue. He may actually need the money or at least need it to maintain his lifestyle. But if the idea is to make money the last laugh may be on Trump as his hotels and other properties are suffering from his publicly, and his core supporters can't afford them.

But I think the real reason he's running is shear narcissistism.

Trump's big sell for the presidency has been predicated on being the biggest, strongest, winningest guy for the job, who'll protect us all from mean brown people and political correctness. Skipping the debates- when his opponent is a woman!- will not go down well with even a certain section of his voting bloc, the ones who actually believe the strongman narrative. His core supporters, for whom that narrative is largely window dressing for the bigotries Trump really embodies, and who are largely just as much paper tigers as Trump himself, will not be swayed by that, but there will be some who will question it.

None of them, incidentally, would be swayed by him actually going to the debates, I don't think. Remember, these are people who watched his performance during the primaries, the debates he held there and the way he's conducted himself generally, and came away thinking "there's my guy!" At this point, no amount of intellectual ass whooping will influence them away from him, because intelligence in the forms debates are most apt to demonstrate, is not something that bloc values.

I think there are some hard line evangelical conservatives that might be persuaded when they are watching him as their candidate. Remember, before, he didn't represent them. Cruz or Rubio or Carson represented them. People that have been backed into a corner and support Trump might feel differently when his lack of policy and knowledge is exposed. When his rampant bigotry and petty name-calling represents them, there should be a bunch that jump ship. Hillary just has to keep out of the mud slinging game.

Cruz's "Vote your Conscience" might come into play.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

The debates will sway the independents, crucial for Hillary. For Trump the decision is a Hobson's Choice -- no matter how he decides, he loses.

Skip the debates? He'll look afraid to slug it out, and his base will wonder how much a fighter he really is.

Engage in the debates? He'll lose the independents he needs to win as his mouth goes into overdrive under the klieg lights.

To paraphrase John Oliver, if Trump lacks even the basic skills to comfort the parents of a slain soldier, he isn't at 'half way decent person.' In fact, the light from 'half way decent person' won't reach Donald Trump for 100 000 years.

Trump is basically a comic book villain, at this point. This election feels like it's been written for 10-year-olds. I won't be surprised if at the end of this Trump washes off the orange clown make-up, removes the candy-floss wig and admits, that all this was a part of a TV show.
