Marriage, and the wedding ritual, actually started as a Pagan tradition. Religions hijacked it. I've read that atheists' marriages on average, beat out religious marriages. So they go through less divorces than their religious counterparts.

     The Pagans are still a religion at it's core. It could of been a beautiful ritual if government,business and religion had not ruined it. I'm curious though if you can send me the link to some data on Atheist marriages lasting longer then religious ones.

It depends on who you mean by "we." I'm sure there's a range. Sometime a few years ago I think I was a little above average on some test, but I read a lot more in those days.

I think becoming an atheist is more about open mindedness and willingness to question authority. The latter probably explains why I came to it fairly late in life.

I have a feeling that the divorce rate is lower among atheist couples because they marry for the right reasons, more so than say evangelical Christians (who have a high divorce rate all things being equal) who marry because they feel ''it's God's will,'' or ''this is God's mate for me,'' or they haven't had sex yet, and they rush into marriages to do so, because they don't believe in sex outside of marriage. Of course I know Christian couples with successful marriages out there, but it's honestly a myth that the Christian community puts out there that if you are Christian, your marriage will last.

Pentecostals aren't precisely Evangelicals, but they're pretty much the same thing, except they believe in more holy spirit hoo-ha. In my experience, if you aren't married or have never been, you aren't as accepted among them.
