So, on these lines, I'm hoping they react in some way. Maybe a little less Erdogan ass kissing is in order.

I wouldn't bet on it. They'll choose Erdogan over the Kurds every day and twice on Sundays for fear of fomenting a rift in NATO.

I've felt for a while that NATO was obsolete ... I wonder if this might be the wedge that splits the wood?

Turkey allied with Russia would be amongst the worst nightmares for US geopolitics. Kurds can be used and discarded, and having no one and no where to turn, will still come back to the US when so bidden.

I can remember when we got a half hour of national news and a half hour of local news, weather, and sports. I still remember the phrase "And in international news..." before the report of some king getting married or dying.

News junkies have it so good these days. Disaster groupies even more so.

Worse than 1974? Two NATO states waging war against each other. Greece and Turkey, remember? The reason for the division in the midst of Cyprus and the main reason why Greece, although broke by all accounts, entertains a behemoth of an army compared to the size of the country.

Two NATO states, of course no other NATO state will choose sides. The Kurds don't have that sort of standing, it's a different kettle of fish.

The Kurds never had a lobby. But one would think that two NATO states going to war against each other stresses the alliance more than calling one state back from destroying an asset. Sarcastic word for the Kurds, of course, since they are more or less the boots on the ground for the West. The Iranian backed militias don't count in the same way, I guess.

The fact that two alliance members went to war meant that the other alliance members were terribly reluctant to line up and take sides, for obvious reasons. But an alliance member favoring a stateless group which has been attacking an alliance member for forty+ years over that member itself?

The reality on the ground is that, to paraphrase Petain, the Kurds are lemons, to be squeezed until there's no more juice, and then flung aside. America is playing both sides of this, make no mistake, but the Kurds will be the first to go, so long as America heads NATO. Biden visited Ankara, not Erbil.

Of course noone cares about the Kurds. Which ties in perfectly with my opinion on American foreign politicy for at least the last 30 years. Always go for the short time gain to be bitten in the ass by the decision later on.
