your views on modern day porn consumption
September 16, 2016 at 11:42 am
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I can get an easy off without porn or intimacy. I don't know...I find porn tends to be unrealistic and boring. Like most things it can be harmful if someone becomes addicted to it. I don't think anyone who's ever actually had sex will have unrealistic standards from porn. People are smart enough to figure out that most women don't have perfect bodies and most men don't have massive dicks.
I would argue that sexual repression and shaming young people for having sexual desires does far more harm than porn ever could.

Losty, do you think the wide availability of free porn is a problem for society?

I'm not sure about that. I think every step towards accepting sex and sexual desires as a healthy normal part of human life is a step in the right direction. I don't know the science behind how pornography affects people though. I have no clue on the numbers of people who watch it vs the number of people who are negatively affected by it.
No matter how accessible it is, I still have no interest in watching most of it. Some are extremely comical but most are not remotely sexually appealing. Some oiled up grunting guy doing an over dramatic chick who makes eye contact with the camera while pretending to like it....nerp not sexy.

I think it's just a collision of old ideas and new technology. There might be (and that article seems to indicate that there is) some immediate negatives to the massive availability of pornography following the communications explosion of the early 90s and the instant and near-unlimited access to information that we enjoy today.
With any sort of huge paradigm shift like this, there's going to be friction, and I think that's what we're seeing. The article touched on the lack of comprehensive sex-ed in schools, and I think this will force states to rethink this. It's no coincidence that the highest porn consumption rates are associated with the places with the worst sex-ed and women's rights (that also holds globally, just look at Pakistan for christ's sake).
So yes, I think that there are some immediate issues that we're seeing right now, although I'm disappointed that the article provides no links or references to the studies that they cite - it would be nice to examine the data for ourselves. However, I think that that's part of the growing pains for a society that continues to expand the availability of information for its citizens.
Additionally, we have to keep in mind that this a correlation, not a causation. Instead of looking at it like 'higher porn consumption leads to worse attitudes towards sex and women,' it could just as easily be 'those with worse attitudes towards women and sex (which could be borne of a bad sexual culture in one's home city/state), tend to consume more porn.'

I'm too old to have an opinion but I do find most porn to be terribly boring. There was a XXX version of Alice in Wonderland some years back that they actually put some effort into. It was a musical. There was one of Cinderella, too.

It's definitely bad, for the reasons cited above. But it's also an easy way to get your rocks off.
I agree that most porn is lame.
All in good measure, though, and it shouldn't become a problem.
Besides, pretty much all men watch porn. Those who say they don't probably watch it even more. And not all men are inherently violent towards women.

Oh my gosh, agreed!

The Alice in Wonderland one seems a little creepy since Alice is supposed to be a child.

It's ok to cast a twenty-year-old in the movie, but not in a porno?
