Damned Pervert Priests - and other assorted Holy Scumbags

RE: Damned Pervert Priests - and other assorted Holy Scumbags
Quote:Bishop picked by pope to investigate sexual abuse faces accusations

The bishop tapped by the pope to investigate sexual abuse in the church's Buffalo, N.Y., diocese is being accused of abuse himself, The Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Michael Garabedian, the attorney for the alleged victim, told the church's Newark, N.J., archdiocese that he was planning to file a lawsuit for his client who says he was abused by Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio in the 1970s. The lawyer plans to file the suit next month, he told the AP.

His 56-year-old client, Mark Matzek, said he was repeatedly abused by DiMarzio and the late Rev. Albert Mark, while serving as an altar boy at St. Nicholas Church and attending St. Nicholas School.

You got to wonder why Catholic church still uses kids for that altar business.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

According to the AP (in a report that ran in the National Catholic Reporter, to their credit), all those big lists of names of sexual-predator priests are woefully incomplete, as more than 900 additional names have not been put on these lists. And that’s not all!

More than a hundred of the former clergy members not listed by dioceses or religious orders had been charged with sexual crimes, including rape, solicitation and receiving or viewing child pornography.

On top of that, the AP found another nearly 400 priests and clergy members who were accused of abuse while serving in dioceses that have not yet released any names.

A total of about 380 Southern Baptist leaders and volunteers have faced allegations of sexual misconduct, a newspaper investigation found

The Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News in an expansive investigation named 220 pastors, ministers, deacons, volunteers, Sunday school teachers and others who were found guilty of sexually abusing churchgoers over 20 years.

More than 250 have been charged. And roughly 380 Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers have faced allegations of sexual misconduct involving more than 700 victims, the report found. That includes those who were convicted, credibly accused and successfully sued.

Some of the victims were molested repeatedly and some were as young as 3, according to the report.

The news outlets' yearlong investigation also found that three dozen pastors and workers who have been suspected of being predators continue to work for Baptist churches.

“The thing that makes me saddest is that we didn’t do it ourselves,” Burleson told NBC News of the report. “That’s why you need a free press in America.”

Catholic Leaders Promised Transparency About Child Abuse. They Haven’t Delivered.

“To award a victim a substantial amount of money, yet claim that the accused is not a pedophile, is an insult to one’s intelligence,” said Garabedian, who has handled hundreds of abuse cases over the last 25 years. “It’s a classic case of the archdiocese ducking, delaying and avoiding issues.”

Over the last year and a half, the majority of U.S. dioceses, as well as nearly two dozen religious orders, have released lists of abusers currently or formerly in their ranks. The revelations were no coincidence: They were spurred by a 2018 Pennsylvania grand jury report, which named hundreds of priests as part of a statewide clergy abuse investigation. Nationwide, the names of more than 5,800 clergy members have been released so far, representing the most comprehensive step toward transparency yet by a Catholic Church dogged by its long history of denying and burying abuse by priests.

But even as bishops have dedicated these lists to abuse victims and depicted the disclosures as a public acknowledgement of victims’ suffering, it has become clear that numerous alleged abusers have been omitted and that there is no standard for determining who each diocese considers credibly accused.

If I had to guess, the list of "credibly accused" strongly relates to those cases where the diocese has minimal legal or financial exposure. It's not like they're rolling on the pope, lol. They're getting rid of expendables.

Study identifies 16 child sex abuse rings in Victorian Catholic Church

Quote:A three-year research project into paedophile Catholic clerics in Victoria has identified 16 child sex abuse networks operating over six decades involving 99 priests and Christian Brothers.

The investigation found that clergy paedophile rings shared patterns of behaviour with criminal gangs, the Mafia, terrorist cells, corrupt police, drug dealers, money launderers and price-fixing cartels.

The research showed their abuse was facilitated and reinforced by church hierarchy, including five successive archbishops of Melbourne from Daniel Mannix, appointed in 1917, through to George Pell (himself appealing against a conviction for child sex abuse) in 2001.

Muytjens’ research found the largest and most active dark networks were at schools including St Alipius in Ballarat and Salesian College, Rupertswood, and orphanages including St Vincent de Paul’s in South Melbourne and St Augustine’s in Geelong.
