New Zealand Inquiry Finds Hundreds of Reports of Abuse by Priests

Between 1950 and 2021, there were 1,680 allegations of abuse reported against diocesan clergy and members of Catholic religious orders or associations, according to data from Te Ropu Tautoko, a group coordinating between the commission — the highest form of investigation in New Zealand — and the Catholic Church.

The “sobering data” uncovered the scale of abuse within the Catholic Church, Katherine Anderson, a lawyer assisting the commission, said in a statement. “The research is startling, and the heartbreaking reality is that helpless and vulnerable children and adults sit behind these facts and figures.”

Accusations were levied against 14 percent of all diocesan clergy in New Zealand, according to the figures, many of them between the 1960s and the 1980s, with a majority of instances involving children at educational or residential facilities under the church’s supervision. Over half of all abuse reported involved sexual harm or other physical, emotional or psychological abuses. Others involved the failure to act on complaints.

Still, a support network for victims called the data the “tip of a huge iceberg.”

But Justin is naive if he thinks that the pope would ever apologize for something that is the core of Christianity, which is to destroy all other religions (and therefore cultures) and replace them with Christianity. Ex-Pope admits errors in handling of abuse cases

Former Pope Benedict XVI has acknowledged that errors were made in the handling of sexual abuse cases when he was archbishop of Munich.
In a letter released by the Vatican, the former pontiff asked forgiveness for any "grievous fault" but denied personal wrongdoing.
A German report into the Catholic Church alleged that he failed to act over four child sex abuse cases.
Then known as Josef Ratzinger, he was archbishop of Munich from 1977 to 1982.
The report by a German law firm alleges that abuse continued under his tenure, and that the priests accused of carrying out the abuse remained active in church roles.

Before the report was released in January, Pope Benedict had denied he had attended a meeting in 1980 about sexual abuse cases when he was archbishop of Munich.
But after the report's release, Pope Benedict said he had indeed attended the meeting. His personal secretary at the time, Archbishop Georg Ganswein, said the omission was an oversight in the editing of the statement released at the time and was not done out of bad faith.

Pressure on Italian Catholic church to face child sexual abuse reckoning

Pressure is mounting on the Catholic church in Italy to face a reckoning on child sexual abuse amid unofficial estimates that the country could have the highest number of victims of paedophile priests in the world.

A group of religious and lay associations have now come together to push for an independent inquiry and to urge the Italian state to enact tougher laws to bring paedophile priests to justice and come up with a plan to protect children from sexual abuse by clergy. 

“The problem in Italy is enormous but it has been hidden,” said Cristina Balestrini, who leads a group for abuse victims and their families. “For example, two of the priests who celebrated my marriage turned out to be paedophiles. Then there was the priest who raped my son. So that makes three paedophile priests, just in my small world.”

There are no official figures on the number of clerical abuse victims in Italy, but the main victims’ association, Rete L’Abuso, has recorded 360 cases of priests accused or convicted over the last 15 years. A treaty between the Italian government and the Vatican means the majority of child abuse investigations in Italy are carried out behind a wall of secrecy within the Holy See’s jurisdiction. If found guilty by a Vatican court, most priests end up being transferred to a new diocese rather than being defrocked or jailed. Of those found guilty by an Italian court, few are imprisoned.

“It’s obvious that Italy is the country where the scandal could be worse [than in France], because it’s one of the countries with the highest number of priests in the world,” said Zanardi, who says he was abused by a parish priest from the age of 11 to 15. “There are also many foreign priests accused of paedophilia who have been given shelter in Italy. We need an independent inquiry; if the church does an internal one, it won’t be credible.”

A man who was abused by monks at a school in Fife run by Christian Brothers has secured £1.4m in damages.
It is believed to be the highest sum ever to be awarded to a survivor.
The victim was sexually assaulted and beaten by three Christian Brothers while staying at St Ninian's School in Falkland in 1980 and 81.

AB was sent to St Ninian's in February 1980 when he was 12 years old and stayed there until April 1981.
While at the school AB said he was raped, molested and beaten by all three men and was forced to watch attacks on other children.
AB said that Brothers Kelly, Farrell and Ryan commonly targeted children from a dormitory they referred to as "the favourite boys room".
