Influential paedophile monk to die in prison after bizarre case divides church

A powerful paedophile monk will die in prison after survivors spoke out against their “spiritual father”, who used his influence to abuse children and keep them quiet for decades in Sydney’s Russian churches.

Alexis Rosentool, 74, has reigned as abbot of a monastery tucked away in the Snowy Mountains town of Bombala since the 1990s.

He had ascended, over the decades, through the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) in Sydney and abroad, earning the senior title archimandrite. He was considered a gifted artist who painted religious icons through the diocese’s churches and homes across the city.

But Rosentool was an active paedophile who, over 20 years, abused children within the church community.

On Friday, he faced sentencing over crimes against three boys, now adult men.

Rosentool was sentenced to 19 years in prison, 13 without parole. His life expectancy, the court heard, was about seven years due to declining health. Rosentool sat in shocked silence, dialled in from Goulburn Supermax prison.

Former Youth Pastor Accused Of Sexually Abusing At Least 6 Teenagers

Thomas Pinkerton Jr., 52, who was commonly known as 'Pastor Tommy,' faces 24 felony and misdemeanor counts following accusations that he sexually abused six teens from 2006 to 2010 while working at Central Christian Church in Baltimore County and is being held without bond.

Pinkerton is accused of inappropriately touching and kissing six teens between the ages of 13 to 19 while serving as a youth pastor at the Assemblies of God church. A seventh man reported abuse allegedly committed by Pinkerton in Georgia, which is being referred to local authorities, and detectives believe there could be even more victims.

Pinkerton, who has recently worked as a traveling evangelist, was "completely shocked" by the charges, according to Hollimon.

Pinkerton's case is the latest incident of alleged child sex abuse allegations facing the Assemblies of God, the world's largest Pentecostal denomination.

Alabama priest accused of having a sexual relationship with teen stripper, paying her thousands in hush money

Robert Sullivan, 61, is on leave as pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, Alabama, after he was publicly accused of initiating a relationship with Heather Jones, now 33, when she was a vulnerable teenager in 2009.

While tipping her, he offered her $273,000 to sign a non-disclosure agreement in exchange for “an ongoing relationship that would include financial support in exchange for private companionship,” Jones alleged, telling the Guardian that the agreement included sex.

Jones, who was raised in foster care due to her mother’s “severe neglect,” said she “was hesitant but ultimately agreed due to his persistence and the state [of mind] I was in,” according to her letter to the diocese.

Days later, she received two wire transfers of $136,500 each under the name of an attorney’s office, she alleged.

Sullivan, initially posing as a doctor, took her out to shop, eat, drink and stay at hotels in at least six different Alabama cities over the course of the relationship, which lasted until this year, she alleged.

Between just July 18, 2024, and March this year, a Venmo account under Jones’ name had paid Jones almost $120,000, she told the Guardian.

Jones said she felt compelled to go public with the allegations because Sullivan works so closely with families and their children at his church.

“Others may be vulnerable to the same type of manipulation and exploitation,” she told the paper.

Sullivan has been a priest for more than 32 years and was formerly president of John Carroll High School for six years.

Church pastor guilty of rape and beating children

Rev James Haram, who had been with the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing), was found guilty of 19 charges of physical and sexual abuse, including raping a woman and beating children.

His crimes took place between 1997 and 2020 at addresses in Glasgow, Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire and in South Ayrshire.

The jury heard Haram raped, attacked and verbally abused the woman.

This included suggesting she should kill herself.

He also tracked her movements and forced her to take part in religious activities.

The victim recalled her "whole body going limp" while being choked by Haram.

Jurors heard the pastor would pressure her into sex while making biblical references.

The victim said she was told that she had to "subject" herself to him and recalled how she would sob as a result of the encounters.

The court also heard evidence of Haram's child abuse, with one girl recalling how she was regularly beaten by the pastor.

He also hit children with a wooden spoon or a rod and carried out "modesty checks" on girls to see what they were wearing.

Jurors heard he flew into a rage while in a car with two of the children and claimed that he would deliberately crash the vehicle, killing them all.

Haram told the trial: "They knew I did not mean it."

Warren County pastor arrested on child sex charges, North Carolina SBI says

A warrant issued for 30-year-old Shelton Burkart alleged that on June 24, 2024, he “knowingly” possessed visual material of children, ages 8 to 12, naked in dressing rooms and engaging in sexual activity.

He’s been charged with five felony counts each of second degree- and third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

According to the North Carolina SBI, Burkart is a pastor at Zion Global Methodist Church in Norlina.

Burkart is being held under a $300,000 bond. He did appear for the first time in court Tuesday, and had a bond review/modification hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Irvington pastor arrested for alleged witness intimidation

MCSO said a former church member reported feeling intimidated after raising concerns about a registered sex offender holding a position at the church.

On June 30, John Penrod was arrested after authorities received a report from a church member that Penrod was participating in volunteer activities at the church where minors were present.

Deputies said Penrod was a registered sex offender and failed to notify authorities about his participation in the activities.

Authorities said other witnesses reported the loss of significant church roles and public removal by deputies, allegedly due to their cooperation with authorities.

Robert Wagley, the pastor of the church, was arrested on Thursday, Aug 14 and is charged with three counts of witness intimidation, according to jail records.

Decades of disturbing clergy abuse at elite NJ Catholic school set to be exposed — and its former leader could be state’s next cardinal

Auxiliary Bishop Elias R. Lorenzo — a potential successor to Newark Cardinal Joseph Tobin, who will reach the mandatory retirement age in May 2027 — served for three decades as a teacher and clergy leader at the all-boys Catholic school in Morristown.

During his time, at least 30 students came forward with sexual abuse allegations against Delbarton clergy, the Survivors Network of those Abused By Priests said — some with lurid claims of being brutally abused hundreds of times by Benedictine monks.

Delbarton — a Benedictine Catholic middle and high school in tony Morristown where tuition is $48,725 a year — boasts a long list of famous alumni, including “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage, Yankees starting shortstop Anthony Volpe and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s sons.

But for the last decade and a half, the school has been in the news over sex abuse allegations against several clergy members at the school — including a former headmaster.

Most recently, a 2021 lawsuit filed by a former student claims that he was raped and abused more than 150 times by a trio of monks as a Delbarton seventh grader in the 1970s.

Survivors have long accused the school of waging a campaign to silence them.

Victim Tom Crane, whose lawsuit was settled in 2018, told the Daily Record that he endured a “nightmare of intimidation” after filing the suit claiming he and his brother were sexually abused by two Delbarton monks in the 1970s.

His attorney Gregory Gianforcaro, who currently represents 31 plaintiffs against Delbarton and nearly 50 victims total, said prosecutors are certain to include the school in the new grand jury investigation.

“I am confident that once the results of this investigation are public that there’s going to be a lot of information that will surface about the survivors,” Gianforcaro told The Post.

He told the court the group became known among NOS members as the "Lycra lovelies" or the "Lycra nuns" after witnesses reported seeing the defendant surrounded by attractive women in lingerie at his home
The women were required to carry out household chores at the home he shared with his wife and daughter, the prosecution said, as well as putting him to bed with sexual favours.

Retired Chicago priest reinstated to church after sexual abuse allegations

A retired priest of the Chicago-area is being reinstated to the church after being accused of sexually abusing a minor.

The allegations against Monsignor Daniel Mayall came in February 2025. At the time, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich announced he would remain out of ministry and school activities during an investigation.

Six months after the letter, Cupich announced that Mayall would be reinstated.

"After receiving the results of the thorough investigation, the IRB determined that there is not a reasonable cause to believe Monsignor Mayall sexually abused the person making the accusation. In addition, the IRB recommended that Monsignor Mayall be reinstated to ministry. I have accepted their recommendation effective immediately."

Las Vegas pastor thought he was meeting 14-year-old boy for sex

Police and federal officials arrested a Las Vegas pastor as he prepared to meet a person he believed was a teenage boy for sex, according to documents the 8 News Now Investigators obtained Monday.

Neal Creecy, 46, faces a charge of luring or attempting to lure a child or mentally ill person with the use of computer technology to engage in sexual conduct, records said.

During an interview with police, Creecy “admitted to having been involved in the conversation with the decoy… and made the utterance, ‘I’m so sorry,’” documents said.

Creecy posted bond shortly after his arrest and was due to return to court on Sept. 2.

Syracuse Catholic Church nears payments for 411 sex abuse survivors. The challenge: Who suffered most?

Syracuse, N.Y. — Dozens of people crowded into a courtroom this spring to reveal the lasting scars from childhood sex abuse by clergy and church employees in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse.

The diocese has organized a $176 million fund to compensate the abuse survivors. If it were divided evenly over 411 people with claims, after some lawyers get paid, each would receive as much as $400,000.

But it won’t work that way. Instead, a court-managed process will try to calculate a way to give the most money to the people hurt the worst.

This will turn the years of pain for each of the hundreds of abuse survivors into a specific cold, hard number.

How were you abused? For how long? Where did it happen? How have you coped with it over decades?

All these elements of shattered lives, and more, will be fed into a point system that ultimately decides a survivor’s compensation.

The bankruptcy of the Archdiocese of New Orleans shows how it can work. Sexual penetration equals 75 points. Oral sex is 56 points. Taking and publishing a video of the abuse is 20 points. Over the clothes or under the clothes?

Set of lawsuits filed against catholic churches in southern New Mexico

An attorney representing a group of victims says they were sexually abused by clergy members over a span of decades.

Eight separate lawsuits were filed in July at the same time, and each lawsuit accuses eight different priests of sexually abusing children from 3 to 15 years old. Their lawyer said the lawsuits were filed as the victims pursue accountability and look to the dioceses they say allowed the abuse to happen.

One of the lawsuits claims that Father Emilio Roure abused a child as young as seven years old in 1956 and continued to abuse her for eight more years inside of the ‘Shrine and Parish of our Lady Guadalupe’ in Dona Ana County. It claims he used his power as a priest to groom her.

“A couple of the perpetrators in these cases, the ones that we filed most recently, are notorious serial offenders,” said attorney Levi Monagle.

Among those offenders, Monagle said, is Bernard Bissonnette, who is accused of sexually abusing over 30 boys in New Mexico.

The lawsuit said the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces and Bishop Ricardo Ramirez knew about his “proclivity to sexually abuse children” and that the abuse happened at St. Eleanor Parish in Ruidoso. “So those kinds of cases with those kinds of priests represent the most disturbing manifestation of the clergy abuse phenomenon,” said Monagle.

Madison priest arrested for trying to have sex with teenage girl in Clintonville

Officials say the 37-year-old man allegedly made plans to meet up with a 14-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity.

On Sunday night, Clintonville Police arrested Andrew Showers in Clintonville. He was booked into the Waupaca County Jail on charges of child enticement, use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, and attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child.

Clintonville Police say that during the course of the investigation they learned Showers is a priest in Madison. According to the St. James School website, Showers is employed as a parochial vicar at the catholic school in Madison.
