Bolivia sentences priests for concealing decades of child sex abuse
A Bolivian court sentenced two elderly Spanish Jesuit priests to a year each in prison on Tuesday for concealing decades of child sex abuse committed by their colleague in the church.
The convictions of the priests, Marcos Recolons, 81, and Ramon Alaix, 83, mark Bolivia's first successful criminal prosecution against high-ranking members of the Catholic Jesuit order implicated in concealing abuse cases.
Prosecutors argued that Recolons and Alaix led the Jesuit order in Bolivia while the abuse occurred. They were aware of the allegations against a priest, Alfonso Pedrajas, but failed to report them to police, allowing him to continue contact with children, according to the prosecution.
The case came to light in 2023 with the publication of a diary belonging to Pedrajas, who died in 2009. In it, he wrote about abusing at least 85 minors between 1972 and 2000, many of whom were Indigenous students on scholarships at a prominent boarding school.
The diary entries sparked international outrage and intensified the debate over the Catholic Church's accountability in child sex abuse scandals across Latin America.
In addition, prosecutors will pursue new cases against other priests named by victims during the trial, the judge said.
Pedro Lima, a spokesperson for a Bolivian sex abuse survivors' group, said the one-year sentence for each priest was "not very severe" but still "makes clear that they were responsible."
He called the ruling a historic moment.
"We want this to be a precedent so that no boy or girl in Bolivia suffers sexual abuse," Lima added.

Civil complaint against Archdiocese of Hartford alleges priest sexually abused minor at gunpoint in 1988
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A civil complaint has been filed against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford for allegations stating a late New Haven priest, the late Rev. Howard Nash, sexually assaulted an 8-year-old boy at gunpoint in 1988.
The civil complaint states that Nash began telling the victim about his house in Vermont at one of these family gatherings, knowing that the boy had recently taken an interest in skiing. Arrangements were made for him to visit Nash for a weekend and ski at Mount Snow.
The victim claims that while he was given his own bedroom in the home, Nash entered the room multiple times throughout the night and sexually assaulted him using the same gun from earlier that day. According to the complaint, Nash smelled of alcohol during the incident.
The complaint states that the next day, on Sunday, weather conditions were not suitable for skiing, and Nash drove the victim back to his home in Connecticut. Nash allegedly told him that whatever he thought happened was a nightmare, and that he better forget all about it.
The complaint states that the Archdiocese had a duty to use reasonable care to prevent priests working within the Archdiocese from sexually assaulting, abusing or exploiting minor children.
It further claims that the Archdiocese purposefully and intentionally concealed all evidence of an ongoing sexual assault problem between priests and minors within the church. Despite allegedly being aware of the situation between Nash and the victim, they continued to allow him and other accused priests to work in the Archdiocese.

Midland pastor convicted of sexually abusing child after week-long trial
A Midland County jury has found James Randolph, a former youth pastor at Living Word Church, guilty on all six counts of sexually abusing a girl when she was a child.
The verdict came Friday afternoon after a seven-day trial and two and a half hours of deliberations. Ten men and two women found Randolph, 59, guilty of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a relationship, three counts of second-degree CSC with a relationship, and one count of second-degree CSC with a child under 13.
Randolph served for decades as head of youth ministries at Living Word International Church, led by Pastor Mark Barclay, his father-in-law.
This is the second time Randolph has been convicted of sexual assault. In 1985, he pleaded guilty to third-degree CSC after raping a 15-year-old girl with developmental disabilities in Jackson.
Former church members told TV5 they were satisfied with the verdict and raised questions about why Randolph was allowed to remain in leadership despite his criminal history.
“I think there was a ball dropped there,” said former members Dan and Dana Stahl. “That’s definitely negligence.”
Others pointed directly to church leadership.
“Mark Barclay, the person that ordained and promoted and elevated James Randolph,” Dana Stahl said. “He was aware of his past crimes.”

Madison priest was tabbed to escort teens on Rome trip despite reports of abuse
Despite reports of abuse involving a priest in the Madison Diocese, officials were planning to allow him to escort a group of teens to Rome next year, according to the diocese's social media.
Andrew J. Showers' arrest in Clintonville last month on suspicion of child sex crimes came after the diocese had already received complaints about his behavior, including a report of an assault of a young woman in Chicago last year.
At a Sept. 4 media conference, Patricia Moriarty said Showers approached her and her friends at a social event, introduced himself as a priest, then groped her underneath her clothes before sharing his business card with her.
Moriarty's father, John Moriarty, said he called the diocese at least five times reporting the abuse, but was unable to speak directly with Bishop Donald Hying. John Moriarty did reach someone at the diocese and reported the abuse, he said. The family reported the incident to the Chicago Police, who conducted an investigation.
Patricia Moriarty said she wanted to share her story after hearing of Showers' arrest to hold the diocese accountable and show others they knew the priest had assaulted others before.
Prosecutors charged Showers Aug. 27 with attempted second-degree sexual assault of a child, attempted child enticement and attempted use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime. The criminal complaint against Showers, 37, says he sent sexually explicit online messages and traveled to Waupaca County to meet someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl to have sex with her, unaware he was actually corresponding with a Clintonville police officer.
According to a now-deleted Facebook post from Aug. 7, Showers was set to lead a small group on the trip to Rome and Siena.
"The pilgrimage is geared towards young adults in the Madison Diocese and will be led by Fr. Andrew Showers," the post said. "They are working to keep the pilgrimage group small (13 people total) to create a strong communal essence to the trip."

Here's a news from The Catholic Herald from two days ago that was removed and this is all I could retrieve:
Washington DC Cardinal Robert McElroy is seeking to laicize Father Michael Briese, a whistleblower archdiocesan priest, for refusing to take down blog posts detailing allegations that two priests sexually abused seminarians; as well as allegations of a cover-up of the allegations by both McElroy and his predecessor, Cardinal Wilton Gregory.

Australia - Catholic Church attempted to revive outlawed 'Ellis defence' in sexual abuse case
The Catholic Church attempted to reopen a highly controversial legal loophole that stopped it being sued by victims of sexual abuse for millions of dollars in damages, an ABC investigation can reveal.
The "Ellis defence" was a legal loophole that held the church could not be sued because it did not exist as a legal entity.
The Victorian government closed this loophole in 2018 after it was condemned by the child sexual abuse royal commission.
Now, the Catholic Church has to nominate a person to act as a representative when sued, and in Melbourne, that person is Archbishop Peter Comensoli.
The Victorian Supreme Court rejected the church's argument, which the alleged abuse victim's lawyers described as a "distorted construction" of the legislation.
The case is among a four-fold rise in historical abuse cases against Archbishop Comensoli as representative of the church over the past six years.
The ABC can reveal that previously unpublished data shows at least 84 people are currently suing over alleged sexual abuse by priests or other church officials.
But the ability of many victims to sue for compensation has been thrown into doubt after the church in November won a key High Court victory, Bird v DP.
In that case, the court ruled churches cannot always be held liable for the actions of priests because they are not employees.
This new loophole has yet to be closed, despite government pledges to do so.
Advocates say the delay in bringing in new legislation to address the Bird decision is further traumatising victims.
Cases against Archbishop Comensoli make up around 10 per cent of the number of institutional abuse cases filed since 2018, when the Victorian government passed a law forcing religious institutions to nominate a "proper defendant".
As a result of the new law — the Legal Identity Act — institutional sex abuse cases filed against churches, schools, sporting clubs and other community organisations have also exploded four-fold, rising from 125 in 2018-19 to 504 last financial year.

Judge confirms $246M sex abuse settlement against Catholic Diocese of Rochester
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A judge on Friday signed the confirmation for the sex abuse settlement against the Catholic Diocese of Rochester. It totals $246 million.
Lawyers say the 475 survivors will start getting checks in the mail within 4 to 5 months. This ends the six-year bankruptcy case against the Diocese of Rochester. It comes after hundreds of survivors unanimously voted to accept the settlement.

Nuns vs the Vatican: documentary alleges sexual abuse and misconduct in the Catholic church
Nuns, which is directed by Emmy winner in Lorena Luciano and executive produced by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay and premiered at the Toronto film festival on Saturday, largely centres around Gloria Branciani and Mirjam Kovac, who are among dozens allegedly victimized by Marko Rupnik, a former Jesuit priest currently awaiting canonical trial for sexual, spiritual and physical abuse.
Rupnik was excommunicated in 2020 for absolving the sins of a novice with whom he had sex. But that excommunication was lifted within the same month after Rupnik repented. One expert voice in the documentary points out that the excommunication could only have been lifted with authorization from Pope Francis.
He is referred to in the documentary as the Michelangelo of the John Paul II papacy, exerting much of that influence to commit his alleged crimes.
He coaxed Branciani into joining Loyola so she didn’t lose her connection to Christ. He would speak of religious art and iconography suggestively, describing paintings of the virgin mother revealing the baby Jesus’s leg sensually, for example. He would say that connecting with Catholicism involves both the spirit and the body, suggesting that sex with him is like touching the divine. Eventually, he cited the Holy Trinity in pursuit of an orgy with Branciani and another nun.
According to Branciani, when she reported the abuse, she was punished by Loyala’s mother superior, Sister Ivanka Hosta, and forced out of religious life by Father Tomáš Špidlík in Rome, who would even write the resignation letter on her behalf. These actions left her ostracized by the community she considered family and dealing with suicidal ideation, Branciani says.
Branciani joins several others in Nuns who have experienced similar abuses across the Catholic Church, including Barbara Dorris, director at Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (Snap), who describes being sexually abused, impregnated and forced to endure a life-threatening abortion with bleach by a doctor who shamed her viciously.
She is among the voices in the documentary painting a picture of how widespread these crimes can be – a 1994-95 study fielding anonymous responses reported that one in three nuns experience sexual abuse by a priest – and how the system ensures victims stay silent. Nuns, after all, take vows of poverty, chastity and silence, a system that isolates and make them easy prey, especially for the very priests they confess to, holding power not only over them but their families and communities. Rupnik himself is said to have reinforced that power dynamic by comparing God’s relationship to man as man’s relationship to women.
The patriarchy in the church is in full view in the documentary when protesters approach a priest about the unveiling of more art from Rupnik despite the allegations against him – his art, which Catholics kneel and pray before, was created while he was perpetrating abuse. One priest simply responds on camera that there is malice behind such allegations.

U.S. Accuses Pastor of Creating an International Sex-Abuse Operation
Manhattan federal prosecutors charged on Wednesday that the leader of a Mexico-based church that claims more than one million followers led a criminal enterprise that for decades sexually abused generations of church members and then destroyed the evidence.
A federal racketeering conspiracy indictment unsealed in Manhattan charged that the church leader, Naasón Joaquín García, 56, and five associates used the La Luz del Mundo Church to sex-traffic women and children and produce and distribute child pornography, among other crimes. His 79-year-old mother was among those charged Wednesday.
Mr. García is already serving a 16-year, eight-month state sentence after pleading guilty in California in 2022 to three felony counts of sexual assault involving three different minors.
The federal charges allege that the wrongdoing went far beyond Mr. García himself, and that the church that his grandfather founded a century ago in Mexico became an international system for preying on vulnerable women and children.
“They exploited the faith of their followers to prey upon them,” said Jay Clayton, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, whose office is prosecuting the federal case against Mr. García and his co-defendants. “When they were confronted, they leveraged their religious influence and financial power to intimidate and coerce victims into remaining silent about the abuse they had suffered.”
The government, in a letter to a Manhattan federal judge on Wednesday, said that as recently as Wednesday morning, the authorities searched residences in East Los Angeles belonging to Mr. García and his mother and found more than $1 million in cash and evidence of sex crimes. These included straps used as a sex swing, as well as a sex toy consistent with those seen in child pornography images and videos created at Mr. García’s direction, prosecutors said.
The church is based in Guadalajara, Mexico, occupying a compound that includes a large temple and living quarters for Mr. García’s family, other church leaders and servants. The church also has locations throughout the United States, including in California, New York, Nevada, Texas, New Jersey, several other states and Washington, D.C.
Each leader, calling himself the “Apostle,” took advantage of his position of power and control over the church “to sexually abuse, exploit and rape its congregants.” The abuse occurred over generations, the government said.
As a result of this decades-long cycle of abuse, the government added, many of the victims of Mr. García’s father were mothers of girls and women abused by Mr. García.
“Each leader manipulated girls and young women by conveying that they could earn a special ‘blessing’ by serving him, which often ultimately included sexual activity, including oral sex, manual stimulation and, ultimately, penetrative sex,” prosecutors wrote.
The government said that at Mr. García’s direction, various co-conspirators “identified and primed girls and boys as young as 13 years old” for Mr. García’s abuse.
The government said that the church’s doctrine, propagated and later abused by its leaders, is that members can obtain eternal salvation only by following the Apostle’s teachings. “God will punish and eternally damn anyone who doubts the Apostle, fails to follow the Apostle’s teachings or defies the Apostle,” prosecutors wrote.

3 schools cancel football games against Ohio Catholic school after alleged sexual assaults
Multiple schools have made the decision to cancel games against Ursuline High School after two separate lawsuits were filed alleging abuse by some of its football players and a lack of concern by its coaches.
he alleged victim was subjected to an "initiation" ritual by several players who pulled him from a closet in his hotel room and threw him onto a bed, where one player allegedly assaulted him. Another player is accused of filming the incident and sharing the video on the team's Snapchat group.
The lawsuit claims that the victim was ridiculed about the assault the following day in the presence of Reardon and both assistant coaches. A player allegedly told the victim he was "going to get his butt took."
Text and social media messages included in the lawsuit purportedly show students planning and bragging about the assaults. The filing details a call between the victim's mother and assistant coach Chris McGlynn, in which McGlynn allegedly expressed neither surprise nor dismay about the hazing, describing the incidents as "just boys being boys."
After police were notified, the school began an investigation. However, the coaches allegedly instructed players not to discuss the incidents, and administrators were accused of doing little to investigate and deleting the team's social media accounts, WKYC reported.
WFMJ reported that several other alleged victims and/or witnesses have come forward after the lawsuit was filed on Tuesday.

'Predatory paedophile' priest jailed for offences against schoolboys
Canon Patrick McEntee, 71, from Esker Road in Dromore, County Tyrone, was described by the judge at Dungannon Crown Court as a "predatory paedophile" who abused children in his care.
McEntee, who was a teacher at St Michael's College in Enniskillen, took the boys into his private quarters where some of them were made to sit on his knee or touched inappropriately.
Judge Sherrard told the court the priest presented himself to those he was not abusing as a caring Christian man, but was in fact assaulting children who were in his care.
Sentencing McEntee, Judge Sherrard said the priest had shown a complete lack of remorse and that it had taken courage for his victims to come forward.
He said the abuse had left an indelible mark on the victims and had deeply affected their lives and education.

Florida police charge Assemblies of God pastor with failing to report child sex abuse
Mark Vega, 55, senior pastor of Ignite Life Center church in Gainesville and a former chaplain for the New York Yankees, “intentionally endeavored” to prevent reports of sex abuse at his church from reaching police, according to an Aug. 20 complaint filed in Alachua County Circuit Court. Under Florida law, any person with knowledge of child abuse is required to report to authorities; failure to do so is a felony.
Since 2023, three youth leaders from Ignite, including Vega’s son, have been charged with sexually abusing minors during church activities. Meanwhile, the families of six alleged victims have filed lawsuits accusing Ignite and the Florida Multicultural District — a regional Assemblies of God body that oversees church affairs in the state — of negligence in failing to protect children from being molested.
Vega received reports of abuse starting in 2019, according to the criminal complaint, but witnesses told investigators he repeatedly sought to handle the allegations internally rather than notify police, allowing more students to be harmed. In 2022, after Vega’s adult son and another man were accused of coercing underage girls to have sex with them, Vega met with the family of an alleged victim and came up with a plan to avoid taking the matter to police, the complaint said.
Jessica Arbour, a lawyer representing five alleged victims, said Vega and other church leaders engaged in a “pattern and practice of ignoring, and in some cases actively covering up,” evidence of abuse.
“Child sexual abuse happens not just because of abusers, but also because of systemic failures that make the abusers feel that it is safe to abuse kids,” Arbour said in a statement. “My clients are encouraged to see that law enforcement is taking their allegations seriously.”

Pastor convicted of sexually assaulting girls in OC, Riverside
A Santa Ana pastor was convicted Monday of sexually assaulting three girls he met through churches in Riverside, Garden Grove and Santa Ana.
Carlos Ramirez Valdez, 61, was arrested in 2021. He was convicted of seven counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a minor younger than 14 and three counts of oral copulation or sexual penetration with a child 10 or younger, all felonies. Jurors also found true a sentencing enhancement for multiple victims.
At that church he lured an 8-year-old girl into a van during a service and sexually assaulted her, police said. Valdez repeatedly assaulted the girl in the van over a period of three years, police said.
The girl told investigators she was molested in second through fifth grade, with the first attack happening when the defendant took her to a van in a parking lot of the church, police said in testimony at his preliminary hearing.
Valdez also molested the girl in his home in Riverside where he showed her an adult film, police said. He would lure her into the van saying he needed to comb her hair or required help with something and then touch the victim, police said.
Another girl said the defendant began molesting her at age 9 when he was a deacon at a church, police said.

Imam sexually abused girls in mosque
The Muslim cleric was handed a 10 year sentence at Canterbury County Court on Friday after being convicted of the child sex offences, which he denied.
The court heard that he singled out his victims for “extra attention” by hugging them, touching them under clothing and kissing them on the lips and neck.
One recalled Mohammad telling her he was helping them to physically “develop” when he groped their chest.
Another said he would hug “too tight” and put his hand “all the way up” their clothing.
Tanya Robinson, prosecuting, told a previous hearing that a victim said they “felt uncomfortable but didn’t realise at first it was wrong”.
“They said the defendant was friendly, gave too many hugs and kisses, and spoke of being called one by one into the kitchen and given kisses because, they said, the kitchen has no camera,” she said.
“They said they didn’t tell their parents because they didn’t know it was wrong and didn’t feel the need to tell their parents because they trusted him.”
He was charged with 17 counts of child sexual assault against four different girls dating back to 2014.
