The Catholic Church has a lot to answer for. Not just all the protecting of pedophiles but also for condoning Hitler's actions when he was in power.

The Waco Police Department is searching for additional survivors in connection of sexual assault and possession of illicit materials depicting children against Catholic priest Anthony Odiong
During the investigation, police identified up to five victims and learned Odiong was in possession of child pornography, an arrest affidavit states.
The affidavit states Odiong was using his iPhone and iPad to communicate with the victims and police obtained a search warrant to access Odiong’s iCloud, where they found multiple lewd photos of a girl, the warrant further states.
None of the photos showed the child’s face, however, police estimated the child in the photos was most likely 10 years old, the affidavit states.
Investigators said they confirmed Odiong was “in fact within McLennan County and the State of Texas” when he was in possession of the lewd child porn images in the iCloud.
Police in Waco said multiple women have come forward to tell similar reports of sexual assault involving Odiong. The reports ranged from sexual assault and indecent groping to financial abuse, police said.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

An example of why good journalism is critical to ensuring the Catholic Church is held accountable for its sexual abuse of children. Greater awareness encourages greater disclosure.
Quote:Spiritans sued by 58 people for alleged child sexual abuse in schools as cases surge following documentary
Since October 2022, 58 people have filed civil proceedings against the Catholic order, with some also including their former schools in the claims.
The surge in cases follows two brothers going public in a radio documentary to detail the abuse they suffered on the Blackrock College campus in south Dublin at the hands of members of the Spiritans.
David and Mark Ryan shared their harrowing accounts of abuse in an RTÉ Radio 1 documentary called Blackrock Boys, which led to a wave of other victims coming forward.
Blackrock, its feeder school Willow Park, Rockwell College in Co Tipperary and St Michael’s College in Dublin are among the schools named in some of the proceedings.
A case filed this year names St Michael’s, the Spiritan congregation and Scouting Ireland, the youth organisation that has also been rocked by allegations of sex abuse.
Some of the cases taken against the Spiritans have already been settled.

Archbishop of Omaha accused of sexually abusing a minor when he was a priest in lawsuit out of St. Louis
Omaha's Archbishop is among the clergy members named in a lawsuit filed against the Archdiocese of St. Louis and Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski alleging the sexual abuse of minors for decades.
The lawsuit said the Archdiocese has "known of the sexual abuse perpetrated upon its young parishioners and children in the community" by employees, priests, reverends, nuns, teachers, and other staff members.
The lawsuit was brought forth by 27 anonymous plaintiffs.
It accuses the defendants of often transferring the perpetrators to different locations within the Archdiocese or Catholic Church or sending them away for treatment before returning them to unsupervised access to children.
One of the plaintiffs, a former altar boy, alleged Omaha Archbishop George Lucas sexually assaulted them when they were a junior in high school at the Saint Louis Preparatory Seminary.

Priest warned sexually abused child he would ‘burn in hell’ if he told, MO suit says
A lawsuit brought by 25 former attendees of Catholic churches, schools and activities organized by the Archdiocese of St. Louis accuses leadership of knowing about the rampant sexual abuse of minors and not taking steps to prevent it.
The plaintiffs, who range in age from 21 to 83, outlined the repeated sexual abuse they faced as children by Catholic priests, nuns and brothers all associated with the archdiocese, according to the lawsuit filed July 24 in St. Louis Circuit Court.
Some of these children viewed priests as “father figures,” the lawsuit said. Plaintiff D.M used the Catholic Church as an “escape” from his abusive father.
In 1999, a girl age 8 to 9 was told to change into a new school uniform in front of Father James Grady. Plaintiff A.H. was “apprehensive” about it, so Grady told her that “changing in front of (him) is like changing in front of your dad,” according to court documents.
“(She) did as she was told,” according to the lawsuit. Then, the priest sexually abused her, the lawsuit said. The abuse continued four times per week from 1999 to 2002, when the plaintiff was between the ages of 8 and 12, according to the lawsuit.
The abuse of A.H. was not exclusive to Grady, the lawsuit said. She was confronted by a nun known as “Sister Annette” and was sexually abused every weekday by her during that same time period, the lawsuit said.
A.H. decided to tell other priests and the principal of her Catholic school in St. Louis City. She was told she was lying, according to the complaint.
A.H. moved to another Catholic school in 2002, but the abuse continued from another priest, according to the lawsuit.
She met the priest when she was 11 or 12, the lawsuit said, and was repeatedly sexually abused by him in the rectory “under the guise of organizing paperwork.”
The sexual abuse was daily, according to court documents, and the priest told the child he wanted to get her pregnant “like Mary Mother of Jesus.”
She attempted to resist the abuse but was told the priest would “lock (A.H.) up where no one could find (her),” the lawsuit said.
--Abuse in hospitals--
Religious figures throughout the archdiocese were sometimes placed in hospitals.
J.W. met “Brother Anthoneous” while she was hospitalized at 5 and 6 years old in the early 1960s, the lawsuit said. J.W.’s mother also worked at the hospital.
Each day, at around 4:30 a.m., Brother Anthoneous would sneak into the child’s hospital room and sexually abuse her, according to the lawsuit.

Catholic group Opus Dei accused of recruiting children
The former members — most of whom requested anonymity for fear of retaliation — said children were “groomed” through youth clubs, schools and community programmes linked to the organisation around the world, including in the US and Europe.
More than a dozen former members said minors were also encouraged to adopt practices such as corporal mortification, in which members wear a spiked metal chain called a “cilice” around the thigh or use a rope whip called a “discipline” on their body.
“Shortly after writing the letter, the director [of the centre] gives them to the boys. In other words, some kids start using them before they turn 15,” the former deputy director of the Colombian boys’ club said.
Former members said children were particularly targeted as potential celibate recruits.
“It’s a grooming process that starts as early as 14,” said one former celibate member from Spain who requested to join Opus Dei in the early 2000s, when she was 14, and left nine years ago. “To suggest celibacy to a 14-year-old, how is that suitable?”
The organisation stated: “Seeking to acquire a deep faith from a very young age is not new. The Catholic Church has canonised people who discovered and followed their vocation from a very early age, such as St Thérèse of Lisieux”, a 19th-century Carmelite nun.
In 2021, 43 women in Latin America accused Opus Dei in a written complaint to the Vatican of trafficking and exploitation, claims that are being investigated by Argentine authorities. The women were “assistant numeraries”, a female-only category of members who dedicate themselves to domestic work at Opus Dei centres.
Earlier this year an FT investigation uncovered similar allegations in Europe, the US and Africa. Sixteen women said they were coerced as young girls from low-income backgrounds into decades of unpaid domestic service.
“They said the intention was to give them an education, to empower them, but the reality that I saw was the opposite. They were getting free labour to work in their centres,” she said. She left Opus Dei in 2021 after her attempts to reform the school were ignored.

A former Catholic priest jailed for sexually abusing more than 70 children over decades has admitted to more crimes in court
Appearing in Bendigo Magistrates Court via video link from Port Phillip Prison as he lay in his prison bed, 90-year-old Gerald Ridsdale pleaded guilty to eight additional sexual assault charges against children.
Ridsdale is serving a maximum of 40 years in prison after previously pleading guilty to sexually abusing at least 72 children during the 1970s and ’80s while working as a Catholic priest at multiple schools and churches across Victoria.
If he serves out his current maximum sentence, Ridsdale will be at least 100 years old.

She accused a New Orleans priest of sexual assault. The church quietly moved him out of state
Awoman says she was left feeling brushed aside by Roman Catholic church officials and police in New Orleans after she alleged to both that she fought off an attempted sexual assault this past spring by an elderly priest, who initially appeared to have been spared a criminal investigation and then was sent by his superiors to a midwest retirement home – all with the public kept in the dark.
But after Lisa Friloux told the Guardian about her struggles with pursuing a complaint against Gilbert Enderle, and the outlet asked New Orleans police for comment on her account, the agency said it had opened a separate follow-up investigation into the clergyman. That investigation, which was examining whether he committed battery rather than sexual assault, remained pending as of Thursday, police said.
Friloux, 63, said her experience with Enderle – who now claims to be so stricken with dementia that he does not even remember her – reinforced conceptions that key figures in the church continue to fall short of living up to its promises of transparency in cases of alleged sexual misconduct.

Priest thought to pose risk to children is paid off
The Church of England made a six-figure pay-off to a priest assessed as a potential risk to children and young people, a BBC investigation has found.
Canon Andrew Hindley - who worked in Blackburn diocese from 1991 to 2021 - was subject to five police investigations, including into allegations of sexual assault.
He has never been charged with any criminal offences and says he has never presented any safeguarding risk to anyone.
A senior member of staff at Blackburn Cathedral resigned over the settlement and says concerns about the priest were “an open secret” among senior clergy.
“I couldn't work for an organisation which put its own reputation and the protection of alleged abusers above the protection and care and listening to victims and survivors,” she tells the BBC, speaking publicly for the first time about the case.

Abuse crisis in the Catholic Church shows no signs of abating
Clerical abuse has been in the news again lately. For more than two decades, horrific stories of abuse and coverup have been a mainstay of the news in the English-speaking world and beyond. The most recent round of stories raises the the question of whether the church will ever really address the root of the problem.
Earlier this month, a Western Australia parliamentary committee gave its final report after examining the support available to survivors of institutional child abuse, saying the Catholic Church and other religious entities had put their own institutional and financial wellbeing over the needs of victims.
In New Zealand last month, the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care lambasted the Catholic Church in its report to the abuse of children and vulnerable adults in care facilities.
Former Jesuit Father Marko Rupnik, who is accused of abusing some 30 adult women, is still a priest in good standing. Rupnik’s artwork continues to be used on the Vatican’s website—a matter of policy defended by the Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See, Italian layman Paolo Ruffini, in June.
Rupnik is not an isolated case. Last year, Pope Francis called Bishop Rosario Gisana of Piazza Armerina in Sicily “good.” The bishop had been accused of protecting Father Giuseppe Rugolo, who at the time was accused of aggravated sexual violence against minors. Rugolo was convicted earlier this year.
