Calls for Archbishop of York to resign over Church failings in sex abuse case

The Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell is facing calls to resign over his handling of a sexual abuse case, days before he takes temporary charge of the Church of England.
As Bishop of Chelmsford, Mr Cottrell let priest David Tudor remain in post in the diocese despite knowing he had been barred by the Church from being alone with children and had paid compensation to a sexual abuse victim, a BBC investigation reveals.

Tudor was only banned from ministry two months ago - after he admitted historical sex abuse allegations relating to two girls.
Since this article was first published, Mr Cottrell has responded saying he is "deeply sorry" that action could not be taken earlier, but that was the situation he inherited.
However, the Bishop of Newcastle the Rt Rev Helen-Ann Hartley has said Mr Cottrell could have done more and should resign as archbishop.

During his first week in office, Mr Cottrell was fully briefed on the "longstanding safeguarding concerns" raised about Tudor, a spokesperson for the Archbishop said.

Mr Cottrell would have been told:

In 1988, David Tudor was a defendant in two criminal trials

In the first trial, he was acquitted of indecently assaulting a 15-year-old school girl although he admitted having sex with her when she was 16

In the second trial, he was convicted of indecently assaulting three girls and was jailed for six months. The conviction was quashed on technical grounds because the judge had misdirected the jury

In 1989, Tudor was banned for sexual misconduct by a Church tribunal but was allowed to return to ministry after 5 years

In 2005, Tudor was suspended as police investigated an allegation he had indecently assaulted a child in the 1970s. He was not charged and was allowed back to work under conditions

From January 2008, Tudor had been working under a safeguarding agreement preventing him from being alone with children or entering schools in Essex - and yet months later he had become an area dean in charge of 12 parishes

Abuse in the Catholic Church: Is This Hungary’s ‘Boston’ Moment?

The Catholic Church in Hungary has been engulfed by a series of high-profile sex scandals and child abuse investigations. The situation isn’t just a crisis for the church, but also a challenge for Viktor Orban’s Christian-nationalist government.

Since September, a series of scandals relating to sexual misconduct, pedophilia and cover-up in the Catholic church has wrecked the public reputation of five high-profile clerics and occasioned the suspension of a rising, but as-yet unconfirmed, number of their colleagues. Some see echoes of the crisis in the US Catholic church sparked by the 2002 Boston Globe ‘Spotlight’ investigation into child abuse in the city’s archdiocese.

The close government ties of the priests implicated heighten concerns about overlaps between political power, religious networks and child sexual abuse in Hungary. These concerns were first raised earlier this year in February, following the exposure of a successful intercession by Reformed Church bishop (and former Fidesz cabinet minister) Zoltan Balog with then-president Katalin Novak, a fellow Calvinist, to pardon a church member convicted as a pedophile accomplice.

Attention is now turning away from the Reformed community and towards the Catholic Church.

On September 6, Hungarian outlet Valasz Online revealed that Father Bese, a vocal supporter of Fidesz’s anti-LGBTQ+ agenda, had been living a double life as a gay porn movie actor.

While Father Bese’s activities involved only consenting adults, their discovery, however, prompted revelations about other forms of misconduct by Kalocsa priests, including those involving minors. Two clerics – Gabor Ronaszeki and Robert Hathazi – both with strong ties to Hungary’s ruling parties, are now being prosecuted by secular authorities for alleged child molestation.

news broke of canonical and police investigations into Budapest priest Father Andras Pajor, a prominent face of Fidesz’s ‘political Christianity’. In 2023, Father Pajor received Hungary’s Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit from Deputy Prime Minister Semjen for his “role in youth education”.

Father Pajor has repeatedly urged Christians to vote for Orban. He has also, latterly, become notable as a spreader of Russian propaganda, claiming in a YouTube video about the Ukraine war that, since 2022, some 35,000 Russian children had been kidnapped “for pedophiles in the West”.

Former altar boys from his parish, speaking anonymously to Valasz Online, tell a rather different story, however. They claim Father Pajor himself frequently made them strip naked, inspected their genitals intimately with his hands, and gave them full body massages.

In a letter to fellow bishops obtained by the independent news outlet Telex, Archbishop Babel observed that the impact of the successive scandals was greater “because they are interwoven with politics”.

The political dimension magnifies the spotlight on the church, but the connection of religion and pedophilia is a huge challenge for Fidesz – a party that portrays itself at home and abroad as a protector of family values.

The party’s domestic alliance with historic churches long predates its international communication about Hungary as a bulwark of Christian civilisation against Muslim migration and rising woke-secularism.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I believe that stepping aside is in the best interests of the Church of England, which I dearly love and which I have been honoured to serve. I pray that this decision points us back towards the love that Jesus Christ has for every one of us.

What part of, "don't fuck children and don't protect those who do", isn't clear to these pricks?

Want some positive press for your religion?

Try something like, "Hi, Police? This is father/bishop/archbishop/imam/rabbi/archbigot Insertnamehere. I've just become aware of a priest in my organisation who may have been molesting children. Can you send someone over to investigate?"

Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni:

"You did WHAT?  With WHO?  WHERE???"

56 clergy — including 48 priests — accused of sexual abuse dating back to the 1950s in Michigan Catholic diocese

State Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office issued the report as part of a five-year investigation into clergy sexual abuse within the Great Lakes State’s Catholic dioceses.

Of these, 11 Catholic clergy abuse cases had charges filed and nine have resulted in convictions as a result of its statewide probe.

Vincent DeLorenzo, a former priest, was sentenced to one year in jail and five years of probation in June 2023 for attempted first-degree criminal sexual assault of a 5-year-old boy, who he allegedly molested after a family funeral.

Joseph Comperchio, a Catholic schoolteacher and church musician who presented himself as a religious brother, was sentenced in August 2021 to up to 30 years behind bars for sexually abusing four children. He died in prison in 2022.

The report is just one of seven Nessel has promised to release for each Catholic diocese in Michigan. Reports for the diocese of Marquette, Gaylord and Kalamazoo have already been made public.

“These reports are important, not just because we made a promise to the survivors years ago, but because victims, especially in cases like these where the assaults were perpetrated by entrusted members of a community, are often silenced — in some cases for decades or a lifetime,” Nessel said in a statement.

All of the remaining reports are expected to be completed by 2026.

Catholic schoolteacher made child porn from school yearbook photos, Kentucky cops say

Kentucky Catholic schoolteacher has pleaded guilty to child pornography-related charges after authorities said he photoshopped students’ faces onto nude female bodies and shared them online.

While employed as a seventh- and eighth-grade religion teacher at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic School in Louisville, Fautz shared child sexual abuse material online with an undercover FBI agent, according to a criminal complaint.

Several images Fautz shared included the yearbook photo of a St. Stephen student, believed to be between 12-15 years old, photoshopped onto the body of a nude woman engaged in sexual conduct, court records said.

An adult victim’s face, also taken from a yearbook photo, was photoshopped onto a sexually explicit image of a female body, court records said.

More than $5 billion spent on Catholic sexual abuse allegations, new report finds

Between 2004 and 2023, three-fourths of the $5.025 billion reported was paid to abuse victims. Seventeen percent went to pay attorneys’ fees, 6% was in support for alleged abusers and 2% went toward other costs. On average, only 16% of the costs related to the allegations was borne by insurance companies.

Jonathon Wiggins, a lead researcher on the report, told RNS that the report represented the Catholic Church’s superlative commitment to transparency. The report “is unprecedented by any non-governmental organization and is the largest effort of its kind,” the report’s authors wrote in a statement.

During the 20 years of the survey, the respondents reported 16,276 credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors by priests, deacons or religious brothers. Those allegations represent slightly less than two-thirds (65%) of total allegations that dioceses, eparchies and men’s religious communities reported receiving.

Of the credible allegations, 4 in 5 victims were male, and one-fifth were female. More than half were between the ages of 10 and 14. About a quarter (24%) of victims were between 15 and 17 years old and another 1 in 5 was age 9 or younger.

Those financial troubles have led dioceses throughout the country to sell diocesan property, including diocesan headquarters, seminaries, schools and churches. In the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, every parish had to pay amounts ranging from five figures to more than $1 million toward a bankruptcy settlement.

Of all the survey years, 2019 had the highest number of credible allegations reported, with 2,506 credible allegations reported that year. That year came after a flood of revelations about the extent of sexual abuse in the church.

Many state investigations were opened after an August 2018 Pennsylvania grand jury report found that there were more than 1,000 victims of child sexual abuse in that state and that Catholic bishops and other leaders had participated in a cover-up.

2018 was also the year that several dioceses found that the allegation that Cardinal Theodore McCarrick had sexually abused a minor was credible, leading to McCarrick’s removal from the clerical state in February 2019.

Pope Francis dissolves South American Catholic group mired in scandal

Pope Francis has dissolved a Catholic religious community with members across South America and the United States, following years of investigations into alleged sexual and psychological abuse by the group's founder and others.

The Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, based in Peru and once numbering some 20,000 members, confirmed its dissolution in a statement on Monday, without offering an explanation. The Vatican did not immediately provide further details. It is rare for the pope to dissolve a Catholic religious community, even one mired in scandal.

The group has been the subject of several investigations by the Peruvian prosecutors' office and the Vatican over the last decade. A report commissioned by the society published in 2017 concluded that Figari and other high-ranking former members had abused at least 19 minors and 10 adults.

'I'm outraged Church of England leader called my abuser a Rolls Royce priest'

"A woman who says she was sexually abused as a child by a priest says it is "absolutely outrageous" her alleged abuser was later praised by the man now leading the Church of England.

Kate – not her real name - was reacting to evidence suggesting Stephen Cottrell, now Archbishop of York, "frequently" held up David Tudor as "an exemplar of parish ministry".

The BBC also understands that at a service in 2018, Mr Cottrell referred to Tudor as a "Rolls Royce priest" even though he knew the priest had paid a large sum to an alleged abuse victim and was banned by the Church from being alone with children."

2 priests accused of sexual abuse of a minor at Chicago churches, Archdiocese says

Two priests who served at multiple Chicago-area churches are facing allegations of sexual abuse of a minor, the Archdiocese of Chicago said Saturday.

Father Matthew Foley and Father Henry Kricek will be stepping away from ministry during investigations into the accusations, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich announced in letters to families of multiple parishes.
