Accused by dozens of women, former priest is convicted of raping a 3-year-old in Brazil
A former priest, who was accused of sexual abuse by dozens of women in Brazil, was sentenced last week to 24 years and nine months in prison for raping a three-year-old child in 2016.
The court also ruled that Bernardino Batista dos Santos, 78, will have to compensate the victim – who was not identified, given that the case is being handled under seal – at 30,000 Brazilian reais (about US$ 5,580).
The crime occurred during a visit to a country property that was owned by the former priest in the city of Tiros, Minas Gerais State. The girl told her mother what happened and a number of witnesses confirmed that they could hear the victim crying.
Dos Santos’s conviction was received with joy by Carolina Rocha, a 34-year-old lawyer who was also a victim of the former priest and has been an informal organizer of a group of women who made complaints against him.
“Not even in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would see him convicted,” Rocha told Crux.
She said that she was abused by dos Santos in the same rural property in Tiros when she was just 8 in 1999.
She said Dos Santos would take advantage of every situation in order to abuse kids – trips to his ranch, meetings in his apartment or in the sacristy, confessions. Besides the work as a vicar, dos Santos was the principal of a private school connected to the parish.
“He always requested the children to get into the room alone with him in order to confess. That time, however, my mother went with me,” Rocha said.
She said that 73 victims have already talked to her about dos Santos’s crimes.
Only in 2024, when dos Santos was arrested for the first time – he remained in jail for one month – the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte looked for Rocha again, she said.
“Dos Santos began abusing children in 1975. Many victims take decades to open up their hearts about sex crimes like those,” she told Crux.
According to Oliveira, the victims’ ages ranged between 3 and 11 at the time the crimes happened. The majority of the victims were girls, but over the past few years a few men also claimed that they were abused by dos Santos.
She said the Archdiocese knew decades ago that dos Santos perpetrated abuse, but failed to act.
“We managed to obtain evidence that the Archdiocese knew what was happening since the beginning of the 2000s,” Oliveira claimed.
She said a collective lawsuit is being planned, involving not only the former priest but also the Church.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Dalai Lama met Jeffrey Epstein in 2012, was named 169 times in new emails
Newly released emails linked to Jeffrey Epstein‘s case have sparked controversy after references to the Dalai Lama reportedly appeared at least 169 times in the correspondence.
According to reports, some of the emails dated from October 2012 include references suggesting that the Tibetan spiritual leader met Epstein and was also expected to attend a function with him.
European media outlet Nexta TV further claimed that individuals described as followers of the Dalai Lama may have also met Epstein.
According to Silverman, the Dalai Lama had received from other controversial figures in the past. In 2009, the Tibetan spiritual leader spoke at an event for NXIVM, the abusive sex cult whose leader, Keith Raniere, was convicted in 2019 on seven criminal charges and sentenced to 120 years in prison.
During the 2009 appearance, the Dalai Lama reportedly gave a speech and placed a ceremonial Tibetan scarf on Reniere’s shoulders. For his efforts, the Dalai Lama received $1 million, Silverman claimed.

Roster of Catholic celebrities who publicly pressed the Vatican to make the notorious pedophile Marcial Maciel a saint shortly after his death: opera singer Plácido Domingo, Florida governor Jeb Bush, US senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Professor Mary Ann Glendon of Harvard Law School, and Steve McEveety, producer of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ". Glendon, the US ambassador to the Vatican under President George W. Bush, described Maciel as a man of “radiant holiness” who had been defamed by “irresponsible journalists.” Priest Richard Neuhaus, editor of the conservative religious-affairs magazine First Things, announced that he had conducted a “scrupulous examination of the claims and counterclaims” about Maciel’s alleged child molestation, and “I have arrived at a moral certainty that the charges are false and malicious.”

600 Sexual Abuse Survivors Will Get $305M Settlement from Catholic Church as Top Official Resigns in New Orleans
A top official within the Catholic Church has resigned as an estimated 600 sexual abuse survivors prepare to split a $305 million settlement.
Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Gregory Aymond, Roman Catholic archbishop of New Orleans, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, the Archdiocese of New Orleans said in a statement.
Aymond submitted his resignation as required in November 2024 when he turned 75 years old, The Guardian reported. But it was not immediately accepted as the New Orleans Archdiocese worked to settle a federal bankruptcy protection case they filed in 2020.
In December 2025, the New Orleans Archdiocese and its insurers reportedly agreed to a $305 million settlement for about 600 abuse survivors, who found themselves caught up in the bankruptcy.
“Leadership changes within the Catholic Church may signal a new chapter, but for survivors of clergy abuse, accountability must mean more than symbolism. It requires full transparency from Church leadership, the release of records, independent oversight, and concrete reforms to ensure abuse is never concealed again," Attorney Reagan Charleston Thomas, from the law firm Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis and Overholtz, which represents multiple survivors in active civil cases against the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette in Louisiana.
"No settlement can undo decades of trauma," Thomas adds. "The true measure of justice will be whether the Church prioritizes survivors over institutional reputation and commits to meaningful, lasting change that protects children going forward."

New Jersey Catholic diocese agrees to $180 million settlement of clergy sexual abuse allegations
A New Jersey Catholic diocese this week agreed to a $180 million settlement to resolve allegations of clergy sexual abuse, a figure far exceeding agreements in some large dioceses but still dwarfed by other massive settlements.
Mark Crawford, state director of the Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests, said in a phone interview Wednesday that the settlement was long overdue but he was glad the ordeal was coming to an end. He praised the bishop for listening to survivors and for pledging transparency, contrasting him with his predecessor, who fought a legal battle over a state investigation into clergy abuse.
Greg Gianforcaro, one of the attorneys representing victims suing the diocese, credited survivors’ persistence in reaching the agreement. The diocese has said there about 300 survivors of abuse raising claims.
“It’s been an extremely long and arduous battle,” he said in a phone interview.
It’s the latest agreement in a scandal set off more than two decades ago when the scale of the abuse and the church’s effort to hide it came to light in Boston. The New Jersey settlement agreement is more than the roughly $80 million settlements in Boston and Philadelphia, though settlements in California ranged much higher. In 2024, the Los Angeles Archdiocese agreed to an $880 million payment.
