Metallica - Moth Into Flame, my thoughts

Metallica - Moth Into Flame, my thoughts
Yet another song Metallica has released before they release their full album. This one is way better than the other that they released. The riffs have a nice heavy metal sound to them, kinda like new Metallica doing NWOBHM. The vocal melody flows with the track, and the guitar leads sound nice as well. The solo left a bit to be desired, but you try being in a band with the entire world watching you. That's some pressure. I was listening to it all day yesterday and listened to it a few times today, just so I could form a proper opinion on it. It isn't thrash metal, but it is heavy metal.

How is it juvenile? It's a heavy metal song with lyrics talking about how drug use and fame always go hand in hand, and how after you've had your five minutes the entertainment industry throws you away. That's not juvenile at all. Sounds more like.... old famous people talking about what they went through.

How about "Scrap Metal"? ...sounds like a fight scene.

More the music than the lyrical content. If I'd heard this 12-13 years ago, I'd have thought it was pretty rad, but as it stands it sounds undeveloped, lacking gall, a sound that hasn't made any serious progression in years.

Oh, come on - didn't you hear the cute little vocal harmonies in the chorus? That's progress... kind of... Tongue

But yeah, I agree - it seems that ever since Metallica achieved mainstream success  in the late 80's - as well as all the associated backlash from hardcore fans - they seem to have been trying to prove, that they're still just a garage band. At first, it was just an occasional EP, or an album of punk covers (with somewhat desperate titles, like Garage Days Revisited, Garage Days Re-Revisited, or Garage Inc.) in between their more commercial releases, but now it's like they believe, that they really are a garage band. Which they kind of are, in all aspects but authenticity, in my humble opinion. Quite frankly - I liked them better as "sell-outs". Come back Black Album, all is forgiven.

This track is not as bad as the previous one - at least Hammet bothered to play an entire solo - but still, nothing really memorable, or interesting from my point of view. Of course - I realize I'm probably not the target market. Not sure who is though, if I'm honest...

I'll check it out later...
But I usually listen to Metallica for the Thrash, and that I simply get elsewhere nowadays...

At least Hatfield has learned to sing without ending every line with an "uh" or an "ah".
God thinks it's fun to confuse primates. Larsen's God!
