it's almost 2AM in Miami now, and the crowds are growing rapidly

It's a big party

One of Castros first acts was to empty his prisons in the direction of the US. An efficient cost cutting exercise which caused quite a few problems in the US.

But seeing as they're more or less Batista nostalgics that's not exactly a thing to celebrate.

The worst thing that could happen to Cuba would be being deprived again of the chance to find their own way, without any outside influence. They had precious little of that. I would say the last thing they need is someone from Miami barging in.

One of the greater what ifs of the Cold War is "what if the mafia hadn't their claws so into Kennedy and got him to reject Castro's attempt at rapproachment as a quid pro quo for stuffing ballots with his name on them?"

What a lot of people, especially in the US, don't realise is that Castro didn't want to go commie but after the US refused to normalise relations he was pushed into their orbit (a similar thing happened to Ho Chi Minh).

Castro wanted to go full Castro. In what that would have resulted if given the chance to maintain normal relations with the USA, is anyone's guess.

The CIA finally got the job done. About time.
