If he really was God, then that would not have been a problem. On the other hand, if he really was God then there would have been an avalanche of writings mentioning him and the things that he did, and not just a few scattered memoirs from which the Church salvaged four of the less bizarre ones to include in the Bible. IMO, the Bible would be much improved by the inclusion of the Gospel of Thomas.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

@OP: In a culture in which relatively few could read, what purpose would Jesus' writing his message serve? To fail to reach the very people his ministry, as presented in the Gospels, was supposed to reach, i.e., the Galilean peasants?
It would serve as a historical record for future generations!

What scholars point out and which jesus freaks ignore freely is that the various gospel scribblings were written in Greek by well-educated and highly sophisticated Greek speakers living in different places and different times. The notion that this was some sort of "peasant movement" is preposterous on its face. Ignorant peasants ekeing out a subsistence living would have had no time for jesus' bullshit. They'd have been too busy trying not to starve.

My rejoinder to your response (bolded by me) is in the very post you only partially quoted. What future generations?!?

Because he is a composite of several figures, some probably real, some not, and all of them illiterate.

Haha, good point. The world was meant to end before that would be an issue. Jesus was full of shit, of course.

Some years ago, a tablet written in middle Aramaic was discovered. External evidence indicates it was written by Jesus, and the translation appears to be, 'I'm not crazy Mum, I'm just in it for the book deal. '

why didn't jesus write?
scripture doesn't record him receiving a letter to respond to . . .

In fact, the ability to write was the more rare of the 2 skills, and if Jesus could write he would have been a scribe, not a carpenter.
So, except for some fundies and evangelicals who will maintain Jesus could 'do anything', the reality is he could not write, and there is ZERO basis for asserting He could.
Period.
And actually, if Yeshua existed at all, he probably couldn't read, either. Only the wealthy young men had the luxury of education.
