A Loaded Question for Christians
#11
RE: A Loaded Question for Christians
When you commit a violent crime like that and hurt someone to that extent, society needs to keep itself safe from you going out and doing it again to someone else.

I've been accused of a lot of things in life, but being a person with a lack of empathy isn't one of them.

Also, comparing a prostitute being stoned to death to a violent criminal being kept behind bars is asinine.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Quote:prostitution is not a crime

Only in certain counties in Nevada.

Quote:Nevada is the only U.S. jurisdiction to allow some legal prostitution. Currently eight counties in Nevada have active brothels (these are all rural counties); as of June–July 2008 there were 28 legal brothels in Nevada.

There's a story in Bible where Jesus saves a whore from being stoned to death. I heard about it in Sunday class. She apparently goes on to become some big deal. Jesus believed in forgiving people's Sins if they had genuine remorse for their sins and really wanted to be better.

OP describes such a person, someone that has genuine remorse for his bad deeds and wants to live his life as good as possible, ie, someone that's found Jesus, I was questioning CL's apparent lack of empathy for that person by comparing what Jesus would've done in that kind of situation.

Again, prostitution or adultery is not a crime, at least nowhere near comparable to a murder or bank robbery with brutal assault,
theological sin =/= crime
Crime should have real world consequences.

I know the story very well Pool, but what I am saying is they shouldn't be compared. Besides, if you really read it, it also highlights the degree of this particular sin as equal to normal person's sins, only one without sin may throw the first stone.

yes, maybe I should say "it shouldn't be a crime". This exists all over the world from ancient times, almost all of the ancient religions support woman abuse, yet somehow making a living out of it is somehow a punishable offense.

I agree that it should not be illegal to sell that which you can legally give away.

If Jesus forgave the sinner should a christian president hold that sinner accountable? Aren't his sins washed away?

Again, forgiveness =/= no consequences in this world.

You commit a violent crime, you do the time to insure societal safety, regardless of whether or not you are forgiven by anyone. We are called to forgive all ppl, even if they are not sorry for what they have done. that doesn't mean we release dangerous ppl back into the street where they can continue to hurt other innocent ppl.

You're trying to spin this into some sort of hypocrisy when it's not.

In the UK prostitution is legal, soliciting prostitution is illegal.

No.. and I agree with what CL has said.

If he is repentant of his crime, then he can go through the system like everyone else, and may qualify for an early parole.
I would also consider such a thing, an abuse of the office of president.

No search for hypocrisy. I am sincerely curious as to how people think about this issue. I imagined that most Christians would be pragmatic about this scenario.

Gotcha. Sorry for jumping to conclusions.

Yeah, most Christians will answer exactly as RR and I did. Can't say I can think of anyone who possibly wouldn't.
