Annatar, I've started a new thread on this topic and I'd be interested in your perspective (or that of any other ex-Muslim that might be on this forum).

Honestly I don't give a damn about their constitutional rights to burn the quran. You have the constitutional right to burn the bible, burn Fahrenheit 451, burn the American Flag, burn Grand Theft Auto games, burn whatever you like in a proud symbol of your freedom. However burning books is a fascist thing to do. Furthermore, let's not pretend this is about anything other than hatred, and making our country an us versus them thing, which it shouldn't be at all.
"In our youth, we lacked the maturity, the decency to create gods better than ourselves so that we might have something to aspire to. Instead we are left with a host of deities who were violent, narcissistic, vengeful bullies who reflected our own values. Our gods could have been anything we could imagine, and all we were capable of manifesting were gods who shared the worst of our natures."-Me

"Atheism leaves a man to sense, to philosophy, to natural piety, to laws, to reputation; all of which may be guides to an outward moral virtue, even if religion vanished; but religious superstition dismounts all these and erects an absolute monarchy in the minds of men." – Francis Bacon

No one has the right not to be offended. That is the trouble with religions, their adherents are oh so sensitive becuase you can insult them on the deepest level by just by saying that there is no god, or their book wasn't divinely inspired, or that perhaps they should refrain from mutilating the genitals of their offspring. The reason for their sensitivity is because they know full well that their religions are wide open to ridicule..invisible men in supernatural realms, who created the universe but don't want you to eat bacon...you couldn't make it up (but actually someone did!).

Stunts like this jaysus preacher are doing/were proposing to do is just rank hypicrosy, dare say he'd be mortified by some bible burning. Pathetic. Perhaps the montheisms might be kind enough one day to let us have our world back instead of sowing hatred amongst themselves and trying and bring on WWIII, because they think they're all going to a really cool theme park in the sky.

Such a disrespectful post, for such a nonsensical reason. I am a Christian, and you do not see me doing any Koran burning. Do you? furthermore, I condemn this man's actions as insensitive, foolish, bigoted and hateful. I am not a lone Christian on this, there are many who would agree.

Yet instead of decrying the man in question's actions for what the yare, you decide it is time to tear down a religion for your own selfish perception of it. FOrgive me for getting up on my soap box, but what a fucking disrespectful thing to do.

You're a Christian?...forgive me then, instead of cussing me!

You are making my point about oversensitivity for me...is anything I've said untrue? Yet you jump up and down. I think he has every right to burn any book he legally owns - FULL STOP. Although I agree he shouldn't do it because somone, somewhere will want revenge. And isn't that just the problem. I state again the whole thing is pathetic:

- burning books to get attention and sow hatred
- muslims getting upset about it (and giving him the attention he wants)
- people jumping on the bandwagon getting offended on behalf of muslims

Its not the action but the motives behind it that matter and the fact that christains, jews and muslims seem intent on dragging the rest of the world into a conflict, becuase it says they'll be reawrded in their holy books, which are the inept scribblings of bronze and iron age men. Its not me thats selfish is it really! And it certainly isn't me being disrespectful to the rest of humanity who don't happen to be monotheistc.

Nowhere did I say I hadn't forgiven you, Cap'n. Cursing was my way of expressing displeasure with your post, it had nothing to do with anger or oversensitivity. People can curse to emphasize a point, y'know. Wink

Nothing you have said is untrue, but was anything you said called for? Was there any reason to just start calling out religion and making it out to be a five-headed demon with six arms and bad breath? No and no. Jump up and down? I'm getting this way because you are using the actions of one ignorant man to justify belittling and disrespectful behavior toward an entire group. In a word, bigotry.

I am not offended on behalf of my religion by anyone but the man burning the Koran's. I am offended by you on behalf of me. You decide that, in your little world, this whole thing is Religion's* fault. You completely discount that this man is a singular entity with his own thoughts, and that his actions have nothing to do with anyone but him. Regardless, you decide to connect these actions with those of the whole of Religion, in order to make your point that 'Religion is soooo bad! >:C'

Oh, and as for people 'jumping on a bandwagon'? Perhaps some people have decided to hold this man accountable for his own actions, instead of blaming this so-called vague concept of 'Religion', apparently a tyrannical monster that scoops out people's brains and eats them for dinner every night.

Are you telling me that if you were the head of an atheist activists group, and the head of a Christian activists group came to you and suggested a united counter-protest against this man's actions, you would forego unity in favor of some foolish belief that 'Religion is baaaaad! I can't work together with Religiooooon!'? Again, in a word? Bigotry.

*We capitalize Religion from this point on to symbolize your apparent anthropomorphization of Religion into an entity or being.

tl;dr- All you're going to see is an angry CHristian ranting about something anyway, so fuck it. Stop blaming religion for the actions of an idiot.

For someone who ain't being oversenstive you sure sound a little emotional.

This is really simple. I am perfectly within my rights to judge a religion by its foundational texts and the words and actions of its leaders. The wiords in these books mean what they say. And the extremists know it. To this end I stand by everything I've said and am fully justified in doing so with or without your blessing.

You're hysterical canard misrpresenting my position is for a purpose only you are aware of. But before you go around slinging mud perhaps you'd like to check out the books on which you're religion is based, and the words of those who interpret them for the masses.

Adherents (and there are more than one) of you're religion and other montheisms on a daily basis plot acts of hatred against each other becuase they think they are right. If you look at the books it's hard to argue with their conclusions. It is the moderates who by the force of the own humanism have elevated themselves above the barbarism proposed in their faiths. People like me (and speaking personally I nearly copped it in 7/7 London), would quite like our world back from these people, wouldn't you? And I'm afraid they are hiding behind the religion and the moderate masses that fill it churches, synagogues and mosques. It is for that reason I can call Religion out for being exactly what it is pointless and dangerous.
