To assume one could specifically pick out cases where religion actually will do more good than evil, when considering all the effects of the self aggrandize game nature of all religion, is playing god indeed.
No doubt many of the religions afflicting mankind today was given its start by some good intentioned man playing god and promoting a religion. It is difficult to discern the specific intent of an individual through the millenniums of hagiographic mythologizing. But we can still be charitable to the utmost and credit Jesus with motivations which we might consider to be good, yet we are still afflicted with both Christianity and Islam today because he played god.
