I truly think it's sexual repression. A lot of those real hardcore homophobes are probably latent homosexuals.
I had a buddy in high school who we were all pretty sure was bisexual. He was legitimately the most attractive guy in our school and always had girls around him or with him. He was the guy that every girl wanted to be with and every other guy wanted to be. But he definitely made some certainly... questionable, to say the least... comments and things and we were all pretty sure he was in the closet. He was also, at times, extremely homophobic it was very bizarre. He wasn't religious though but I'm just saying it seems like a lot of the time the most homophobic people are just really in the closet gay people.
Interestingly enough my group of friends in high school would have been completely accepting of him if he was gay (even though we were all a bunch of little hoodlums, druggies and criminals we weren't close-minded  ) but he for whatever reason never wanted to admit to it or come out of the closet. To each their own I guess.
I think a lot of these super homophobic preachers need to just try one guy and it would change their life. How sad.

It's more the ones obsessing over gay sex. I would say if someone constantly has gay sex in mind, chances are they want to be a part of the action.
Exactly. I've known a few rabid homophobic fundamentalists who apparently spent more time thinking about dick-sucking and ass sex than I spent thinking about pussy. Self loathing is bad enough. But when you believe that your god also loathes some of your deepest desires, that's a recipe for misdirected hatred.

Some, but not all. I was pretty homophobic back when I was still religious & conservative. But even now while I'm more tolerant I still have no desire for gay sex. I'm not disgusted by it, it just doesn't appeal to me at all.
But when you read posts or quotes from homophobes where they describe gay sex in graphic detail, that is a pretty good indicator that they've thought about it a lot. I know some of them are trying to shock people into thinking that what gays do behind closed doors is disgusting, but it makes you wonder why they're so obsessed with it. You know, like Ted Haggard.

BINGO, they have been brainwashed to hate others when in reality it is really a form of self loathing. Now again, Christianity does not own a monopoly on fear of LGBT, most humans simply do not have a biological understanding of evolutionary reality. There are certainly liberal theists of every religion who have managed to compartmentalize it to the point their empathy overrides the fear of antiquity.

No, never heard of the 700 club. I did look up pat robertson last night. Looks like he was a southern Baptist minister who had his own TV show. Never watched it. I have heard of Joel Osteen and seen hiM on TV while channel surfing, but never stopped to watch that, either.

I didn't grow up around the fundamentalist types. I'm assuming bc I've never lived in the Bible belt, which is where most of them are. We have some crazies one UKIP member who happened to be a devout Christian said that gays caused bad weather.

Boy, even I have heard of good old Pat. He's taking religious nutjobbery to a whole new level and rightfully is deserving of the title of christian Taliban. Wifebeating, child abuse, all fine and Dandy with Pat. Demons roaming the streets, A OK.

Maybe gay people simply over Dramatize the christian position so they too can die on a cross.
Homosexuality is a sin like any other sexual sin. No better no worse. As such requires repentance to enter Heaven. Homosexuality is not the unforgivable sin, but at the same time like any other heterosexual sex centered sin it will not be forgiven of if one does not repent.
One can not 'repent' if by the culture and in their own mind one is not in sin.
The fight if any is to maintain the homosexual sin status so that any struggling homosexual can still find a place with their God if they so choose to have it. Removing said sin status dooms the individual to Hell no matter what they feel of God internally.
Ironically one could point out that the the one fighting to keep Homosexuality a sin, care more for the sinner than those who would allow this sin or any to go without acknowledging it's sin status.
