Ish, but how about extending that to services beyond military service? Say the DOT had a little army of road crews that worked for the sorts of rates that newly enlisted soldiers did?

Not sure on this either, sure it's voluntary, but likely to only be taken up by those who can't otherwise afford those things e.g the poor. As long as there isn't a requirement to risk getting blown up in return - maybe?

I wouldn't support it at all if everyone had to do military service, but if there was an option in more civilian service as well I might be persuaded to support something like that. It would do a lot of good for the country and it would teach people some much needed perspective. I'm just not sure how much I could get behind the non-voluntary part. So... maybe?
Not everyone would have to do military service as there are people who aren't suited for that, they would get a choice in what they wanted to do. Some examples are in the OP.

@Bella,
My caveat to mandatory service is that I don't think the US, in our current state, has the sorts of social programs that would be required for me to feel that mandatory service were justified. At least yall have an NHS and tuition schemes, for now..

Even if the US had something like the NHS and tuition schemes...I don't think anyone should be forced to work in any capacity for their government (or for any other entity).

See, that sounds like an excellent idea. Those who have completed it get discounted university and other educational (tradeschool, etc) fees and employers should be encouraged to higher them before anyone else.
