First of all - Trump is going to be making outlandish excuses whatever the opposition does. And his supporters are dumb enough to have voted him in, in the first place, so they'll buy whatever conspiracy bullsh*t he'll sling - just as they have been doing so far. So the half or so of the country that disagrees with you is dumb, while the half that agrees is smart.

Interesting that you chose to quote and respond to only half of HM's post. As regards Trump's base, what percentage of those people do you suppose could pass a basic civics/current events/general knowledge exam? That's meant to be a serious question, not snark.
Concerning the point to which HM was responding, your advice to those who oppose Trump's policies is to just roll over and let it happen, even if they think his policy proposals are wrong-headed and possibly disastrous? Seriously? Would you have counselled Republicans to adopt this strategy eight years ago?

What does my or your supposition on that have to do with anything? I'd likely guess higher than you, and we'd both probably be wrong. As a serious question, that was pretty bad. It would have been OK as snark.

I'm not talking primarily about politicians. Consider the MSM analyzing Trump's every tweet, hate crime hoaxes, violent protests because a smart gay guy dares to be a conservative...I don't recall that from 8 years ago.

Well, to be exact - the half of the country, that elected a bigoted, loudmouth reality TV attention whore and a pathological liar to be their leader - they are dumb (to put it mildly). The other half are significantly less dumb, for not voting for the orange rape-clown, but still dumb enough to let it happen. America is not exactly famous for having a population, that could be described as "smart".

When 2/3 of a group of people have trouble recognizing basic facts, like that unemployment actually went down under president Obama, there's not much of a better word to describe them than "stupid."

I would add that the anti-elitist crowd has never worked out in a clear way just which elites they are rebelling against. Financial elites? Academics and other intellectuals? Duly elected political elites? Cultural movers and shakers? All of them?
If resentment about specific policy programs undergirded this rebellion, that would be one thing. But it really looks to me like it's resentment in a broader and deeper sense that animates so many of Trump's supporters. No surprise there, since demagogues, practically by definition, tap into such resentment to achieve power, and Trump himself is a walking textbook example of the corrosive effects of resentment in a narcissistic, ill-educated parvenu who's had a taste of celebrity. He and his followers are made for each other. They're just not a good fit for a healthy constitutional republic that depends on a well educated populace, a vigorous free press, and a recognition that facts aren't up for grabs. These people talk truth and principle but practice obscurantism and relativism.
And I'd bet the mortgage payment that considerably fewer than 50% of Trump's supporters could pass that basic (low bar) test I proposed. I doubt our president would pass it either -- not that it would matter to his people.
