We might be moving to Germany!
#91
RE: We might be moving to Germany!
Have a great time in Germany. I've only visited, but liked it every time. They have burger king, of which I am envious.

Reminds me of joke on Germany

A German family, Herr Klaus and Frau Brunhilde are happily married, living in Berlin. Their love and marriage is, after much trying, finally blessed with a single child. A beautiful baby boy named Hans. He sleeps well at night and never cries. After a few years, however, they notice something is wrong with Hans. They take their toddler to the best of dokters to find out just what might be causing it. But not a single one finds out what lies behind the problem: Hans never utters a word. He seems to understand everything. But he has never as much as uttered a single cry or a grunt. A mute in the truest sense. The couple is disheartened and grow somber in not knowing how to help their son. And life turns bleak in their Household.

The years go by. Hans grows up. Year in. Year out. Their house no longer a place of laughter or joy.
Until one night, when little Hans is eleven years old and the family sits at the dinner table, he suddenly speaks. He puts down his spoon and in a clear voice says: "Diese Suppe ist kalt."
Klaus and Brunhilde cry with joy. His voice is the most beautiful thing they have ever heard. Pride. Disbelief. All come rushing in as they hug and kiss their child, who sits unmoved by his plate.
"Hans, Du kannst sprechen!" The mother cries, happily through thick tears.
"Warum hast du nie etwas gesagt?" An equally estatic father asks, rummaging through his son's hair.
Hans looks up and replies. "Bis jetzt war alles in Ordnung."

Edit: see below.

Hehe...

But make it "Hans, Du kannst sprechen!"

RE: We might be moving to Germany!
Quick update:

My family has landed, and are now settling into our new apartment.  Still very busy getting paperwork done (the Germans really do have quite a lot of required paperwork.  Need the residency permit just to open a bank account or get a phone!) and learning the local area, stocking up on basic necessities, etc, but all is proceeding fairly smoothly. Residency permits awarded, working on work visa next.

Apartment is lovely, people here really are very friendly and helpful.  I feel like I speak the most broken German anyone has ever heard (and honestly we have met a number of people who speak no English, like the apartment repair man, and shopkeep of the local appliance store, so I'm glad I speak even broken German, it has been a help).

Hope to find time to tour the city in a more relaxed and fun manner, soon.  Oh, and the food is really good so so far!  Out to eat once, everything was excellent. Enjoying the local grocers as well. No elevator in our building, and we are on the 4th floor, so between that and needing to walk or tram to shops (full grocer called Rewe is only like 2 blocks, and soooo many little local bakery's close, too!) I should be in the best shape of my life in no time!

Miss all my AF buds!  Thanks for all your well wishes and help.  The support here is invaluable.  Hugs to you all!

Aroura

P.S.  Dear Deutschlanders, it is ok to have beds softer than poured concrete, no one will think you weaker for it. Smile

Excellent, I'm really glad that Dresden has treated you well so far.
But those soft beds are really bad for your back. You'll get used to having proper ones very quickly once your back has the necessary muscles Big Grin

Don't miss out on seeing the Staatskapelle under Thielemann!

You have my # in case you need a Deutschlander on the line.

Welcome to a European city, Aroura. Where stores are nearby and mattresses are orthopedic.

Enjoy your stay, don't forget to check how to get access to a doctor, go for a bike, make the best of Dresden while the weather is nice.. And do travel around - visit villages, cross the border, behold the Alps.

This is so encouraging. I want to visit Germany now. Perhaps I'll do that once my kids are all graduated from school and I have some time to do things like travel and breathe.

Also, Prague is like a 90 minute drive from where you are, so...

And only 8.5 hours to Antwerp. You could make that trip and be back the same day!
Given that you pop about 200 or so cafeïne pills.
