I for one would fight teeth and claw against some politicians instrumentalising the demise of one of my loved ones. Regardless if I like what the politicians stands for or if I don't. It's so obvious this isn't to reach out, but to change some political dime over the memory of a dead person. If she doesn't see that, fine. If she's comfortable with that, also fine. But never think this to be an altruistic move by someone who cares.

Are you going to explain what you meant when you said myself and abaris are not in a position to lecture on humanity and why you said it? I'm still puzzled by your remark.
What I meant, liberals are the ones who claim to be sensitive and caring to the suffering of others and they constantly lecture everyone else on that. Yourself and Arbaris, and not just you two, liberals, supposedly caring and sensitive, made what looked to be insensitive remarks that diminished Carryn Owens' grief...

But the fact is, he invited her to a political event with the intention of making mention. If he simply wanted to pay tribute and bestow honor (as if he could add a scintilla of honor to Chief Owens's sacrifice), then the President could have paid a private visit to her. If it's possible you're wrong then you can't be sure it's actually what you think it is. All you know is, if it's connected to President Trump, you don't like it.
Nonsense. As a veteran, I object to politicians of any stripe wearing the sacrifices of military members as political points. It offends my sensibilities and demeans their sacrifices.

As other presidents did before him, he publicly bestowed honor on a fallen military service member. You may take issue with it but many others don't.
Well, of course others don't mind. Thanks for that news flash. Now back to my regularly-scheduled programming.
This is a discussion forum. I posted my opinions on the matter. They don't comport with yours. Don't worry -- you'll live.

No doubt her motivation was purer than Trump's. I have no criticism of her decision.

What difference would it make either way?
That's right: none.

To be clear, I of course didn't mean that the woman's terrible loss was a non-story, of course not, I was referring to the national news reporting on *twitter comments* by unknown indivuduals.

I stand by it, national news reporting on heartless twitter comments by unknown individuals is indeed scraping the bottom of the barrel, and is not a dignified recognition of her loss, but the opposite: it is cheapening it and likely causing her more pain by giving haters a national platform for some cheap populist opportunity to stir some anger.

If it was meaningful and/or healing in any way for the woman who just lost her husband and she willingly agreed to do it, then I don't see why anyone would have a problem with it regardless of what the president's intentions were. I dislike Trump just as much as the next person, but there are times when putting politics aside for a human moment is appropriate and this is one of them, imho. I'm not concerned with Trumps motives. The woman was there to honor the husband she lost, that's all that matters.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Of course, if Trump really wanted to honor her sacrifice, he could make sure she never has to worry about putting food on her table or even help fund one of the numerous organizations that help out veterans and their spouses in her name. But that wouldn't be as ostentatious and get him that sweet round of applause.
