I won't disagree with that.

Real patriotism involves being able to see things that need to be changed.

Case in point - renaming french fries freedom fries because your friends tell you that the Iraq war is a terrible idea: not real patriotism.

I don't see what I can do to change the direction my country is going in other than to continue to vote democrat or independent. Not that many here hold me in too high regard. I'm not about to try to convince the people from the Church I used to go to how bad Trump and the Republicans are.
In truth they may not care as long as he panders every so often.

Ah, this thread reminds me of how, in the early-mid 2000's, conservatives would call anyone that criticized the wars or Bush a traitor.

Good times.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Which always begs for what Hermann Goering said to Gustave Gilbert at Nuremberg:

Quote:Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship.[…] That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.
