What are your thoughts on contractions when it comes to grammar?

I personally cannot stand them! I used to use them quite often. However, my Dad who reviews my college papers has showed me the light when it comes to this. Contractions are just ugly and very informal. I even saw the news use a contraction in one of their headlines.

As long as you don't confuse your, you're, their, there and they're, contract away at your pleasure.

Should be "my Dad, (comma)" otherwise it implies you have other dads who don't review your college papers.

Should be "has shown me the light".
