So he - while being a significant actuarial risk - is not subject to the same surcharges as the others?

Fuck. Just thinking of all the possible circumstances. What quality of life would we have if we went around nit picking people's life choices like this?
I previously said some people don't have fault of their own... but even the ones that do, it's none of my business. If someone wastes their days playing video games all day instead of taking a walk, reading a book, and socializing, their business, not mine. Same. What people do with themselves, as long as it's not directly hurting others, is not my business. And hospitals will have patients that were irresponsible, but aren't limited to obese people, so then what? That's just a price to pay for having the freedom as adults to do as we wish with ourselves. Taxing obesity doesn't make sense. Why stop there? Let's tax sedentary lifestyles. Let's tax the lack of exercise. Let's tax people who have unprotected sex. Anyone who could end up in a hospital due to their lifestyle should be taxed.
I rather go back to focusing on what I'm putting on my children's plate, than looking at people's rolls and wondering how they can feel so pretty. Eff.

That's kind of the point. Where does it end?

Like access to healthcare?

You can say this about a thousand life circumstances. Flying small aircraft, bungee jumping, eating sushi, having a cancer gene, drinking.
That's how civilized, free society works. Everything is on a continuum.

Where sugar is concerned, where it is present/artificially added to pretty much everything, I wouldn't object to some sort of taxation on sugar content over a certain agreed minimum/safe amount... with the aim of getting the food producers competing to lower their sugar content. So I'd be in favour of a kind of relational tax, linked to sugar content percentage. Cos as it stands, it's hard to avoid high sugar content even in things that are not generally classed as junk food... such as ready meals etc. And maybe the same idea for fat or 'bad' fats whatever they are etc... just linking these things proportionally to cost to encourage their reduction where possible. Just an idea though.
ETA: I didn't mean this in any 'shaming' way... I just meant it as a idea for reducing the amount of a dangerous (in excessive quantities) substance in our diets. I eat a lot of junk/processed food as well, so I meant it for my benefit just as much as anyone else.

Myself, I have mental illness that is resistant to treatment. The meds cause weight gain, and for some people, cause massive weight gain. I've been on some of the worst anti psychotics there are. Clozapine was the worst. Now I'm on different stuff. The Rexulti doesn't cause much weight gain but the Zyprexa is supposed to be almost as bad as the Clozapine, but I'm on a low dose.
I've lost roughly 30 pounds in 2-3 years. I'm still very overweight and don't like what I see in the mirror, except maybe the way my face looks when I let my hair grow out.
I don't eat a whole lot of chips, and I rarely eat candy. Ice cream I almost never eat. My meals aren't always perfect, but I also deal with Celiac disease so I have some restrictions on what I can eat.
Since I'm on a semi-tight food budget, I can't always afford to make meals from scratch vs getting something cheap that's frozen. Overall I'd say my diet is probably better than many people that are much smaller than me.

See... circumstances like this make me furious to think of all those body shamers and even the people that get annoyed by big people that feel pretty. Hey, Industrial Lad, hang in there. Hope you get to where you want to be, but I also hope that in the process, you're not beating yourself up.
