the effects were all done the 'hard way'. Good to watch just from that aspect alone.
Kubrick also saved a step in the photography/editing/printing for distribution process (don't recall the details) and the finished product looks great. Only with the advent of HD do a few of the effects start to show their age.
For instance, the 'floating pen' is stuck to a sheet of glass that is rotated in front of the camera. No wires, LOL, but in HD, some claim the glass isn't entirely invisible.
As for walking on the walls and ceilings, Kubrick had constructed some of the largest rotating set pieces in movie history.
Also, 2001 lost out for a costuming Oscar to Planet of the Apes as everyone thought 2001 used real monkeys . . . .

That's true. That's where the thing with the pigeon poop comes in. The noise continued even after they removed it, then a colleague showed them some papers and they said you know what, this isn't noise we're dealing with. It's this cosmic background.

The god who allows children to be raped out of respect for the free will choice of the rapist, but punishes gay men for engaging in mutually consensual sex couldn't possibly be responsible for an intelligently designed universe.

Yes, and I make this prediction:

One thing I remembered correctly, it's very s-l-o-w.
It's amazing 'science' always seems to 'find' whatever it is funded for, and never the oppsite. Drich.

the pacing is indeed s l o w
Still, at the time it was made, nothing really to compare it too. Alien was 10 years in the future . . . .
