The Official "Damned Trump" Thread
RE: The Official "Damned Trump" Thread
Living paycheck to paycheck after increases to the minimum wage? It’s weird, it’s almost like these increases just aren’t enough to allow them to save.

I think that would make a significant difference in quality of life for a lot of people.

I've known a bunch of minimum wage workers over the years - and NEVER did I hear a minimum wage worker cheer about getting a few extra sheckels a month. Without fail - in a month or two they were right back to paycheck to paycheck....

It is political felatio. Nothing more.

The US average minimum wage is $11/hour. Raising it to $15 means an extra $640/month for a full time worker. That’s more than ‘a few sheckels [sic]’.

Poor people are poor because because its their own fault.  They are given every opportunity, and they make poor life choices.  They deserve what they get.  They should be thankful they even have a job at all, no matter how low it pays.

In my experience minimum wage workers get excited about having extra money and will splurge.

The smart ones - most - soon realise they can't keep on spending it like mad and adjust their habits accordingly.

The dumb ones don't.

If you're working 40 hours a week, or more, you should earn a decent wage.

It's not just those in minimum wage positions. Most mid- to lower-middle class families live paycheck to paycheck. The only real difference is typically a mortgage vs. renting and maybe a car with a year or two left on the warranty instead of a car a few years past it. And maybe a hobby car in the garage where the hobby is breaking down and re-assembling different parts of the car. Note, I did not say rebuilding. That actually takes discretionary income.

50 years ago a guy with a high school diploma could apprentice with an engineer to become a drafter and support a family quite easily. These days, more and more companies are requiring the people who do their drafting to be degreed engineers and for most of them, their wife has to work as well. But, guys like OLB still want to believe that the bootstrap method is viable.

One of my pet peeves is when politicians say we should have more STEM graduates, as if that will magically restart ingenuity. There are few STEM jobs, except in computers (and that may not last another generation). They are all overseas now. If you don't manufacture anything, you don't need scientists or engineers.

And strictly speaking, anyone who uses the phrase "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" clearly has no idea what they're talking about. Why? Because until fairly recently, this phrase implied a ludicrously impossible task.

Indeed

Quote:Early 19th century US; attested 1834. In original use, often used to refer to pulling oneself over a fence, and implying that someone is attempting or has claimed some ludicrously far-fetched or impossible task. Presumably a variant on a traditional tall tale, as elaborated below. The shift in sense to a possible task appears to have developed in the early 20th century, and the use of the phrase to mean “a ludicrous task” continued into the 1920s.

No it is not impossible.

But it does require a block and tackle and a reasonable sense of balance....
