That the current president can reclassify the files?

I did say they ARE BOTH GUILTY.

But some find her a hero and him a villian. FOR THE SAME THING....

THAT is my point. Nothing else.

You're the one who brought up the classification thing. But - as has been pointed out to you - Chelsea Manning stole documents in an attempt to expose wrongdoing, while Trump's motivation is less clear. They both stole government documents, but it's hardly the same thing.

Like it or not, motive matters.

Boru

Horseshit.

Manning was not in a position to declassify anything. Trump was.

When you get a security clearance you agree to not doing what Manning did. Your opinion of the legitamacy of the classified material means fuck-all. You compromise the info - you go to jail. In wartime - they shoot your ass. Period.

Got a problem with that?

Get a different job.

Trump says he was able to declassify documents by thinking about doing it.

Get it? The man actually thinks that his thoughts = action.

It's amusing to me that some of the same people who thought Chelsea Manning was a hero find Donald Trump a traitor - when they are guilty of essentially the same thing ----

Discounting Trump had the authority to declassify anything - and Manning didn' t.

Manning served over six years in prison for her crime, and there's no evidence Trump delassified any of the documents illegally in his possession.
Edit: This was really obvious and therefore ninja'd multiple times before I rejoined this conversation. Apologies.

Both correect.

But again - I still find it amusing that some people find Trump a villain and Manning a hero - for the same offense.....

Manning was a whistleblower who paid the price for publicizing classified documents that showed US wrongdoing. That seems different in important ways from stealing and hoarding (hopefully) documents that belong to the government. But YMMV, I guess.

Indeed if come into possession of stuff that says the US is both breaking its own laws and international law and is covering it up from the public avoid scrutiny. The legal or not a person is morally justified in exposing it. But should also be willing to bare the legal consequences for doing so. Manning is a hero because that's what she did. Trump, by contrast, hoarded government documents after his presidency and has yet to offer any justification for doing so on top of that lied multiple times about returning said documents and may have in fact destroyed some of them. That soundly makes him a villain. So no motivation and acceptance consequence matter in this case.

Nuance and context are not his strong suits.
