Bibles in Hotel Rooms

Bibles in Hotel Rooms
It really bugs me when I check into a hotel room and there's religious propaganda (a bible) in the night stand drawer. This also seems discriminatory. If you're going to stick a Bible in the drawer, why not also a Koran? Or the Talmud? Or the Rigveda? Why do Christians get to stick their holy book in hotel rooms but not other religions?

When I find a bible in the drawer I always write something on the cover (and inside pages) like "WARNING! THIS BOOK CONTAINS INCEST, WAR, UNJUST LAWS AND DEATH! KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN!", "WARNING! THIS BOOK SAYS SLAVERY IS OKAY!", "WARNING! THIS BOOK REPRESSES WOMEN!", "WARNING! THIS BOOK CONTAINS 99.6% PURE BULLSHIT!" etc.....

I'm wondering what others on this forum think of Bibles in hotel rooms. And does anyone else mark, deface, rip up, or throw away Bibles when you stay in a hotel room?

I must add that I considered simply tossing the thing in the trash. But I thought it would be more effective to mark it up and leave it there. I like to imagine someone going to read it and finding what I've written. "Good heavens, Charles! Look what someone did to the Bible!" Just wish I could be there to see it!

Now that gives me an idea! Take a Bible, rip out all the pages and replace them with porn. Imagine the surprise when John and Mary Christian take the Bible out to read it, open the cover and find themselves looking at hard core porn! Priceless!

That's kind of petty...theists like having a Bible nearby and these Bibles in hotel rooms are an accommodation, just like an ash tray is available for smokers. Having a Bible in your hotel room is not a statement, it's just an answer to a Bible-following culture.

Not everything that touches religion is a dirty trick destined to lure us into irrationality you know Big Grin I think atheists really need to chill sometimes, i thought the whole point of being an atheist is not giving a fuck.

The sorts of people who read bibles in hotel rooms are just the sort who would bring their own bible with them. And yes, it is a statement. By allowing bibles in their rooms the hoteliers are saying that they cater specifically for Christians and not for any other faith, or lack of it.

It's the pernicious, drip, drip attempt at indoctrination that I object to.

I can get a smoke-free room at any hotel. Perhaps I should demand a religion-free room? Religion has done far more harm than smoking over the centuries.

I don't mind Hotel Bibles that much. They are great places to bookmark with an atheist tract Tongue Yeah I know.. why play their game. But sometimes it's just too much fun. This one is my favorite.
Douglas Adams:
He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

Great point! The next time we make reservations I'll ask if we can get a Bible-free room! It should be fun to see the reaction of the reservation clerk!
