Did you watch this previous season? It was discussed how they were different genders during past regenerations. Missy was male in past regenerations, which I suppose opened it up for The Doctor to be allowed to regenerate into a female.

Okay, obviously in over my head here. Never watched an episode so no clue what a regeneration is.

This process allows a Time Lord who is old, wounded or otherwise dying to undergo a transformation into a new physical form and a somewhat different personality. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regeneration_(Doctor_Who)

This process allows a Time Lord who is old, wounded or otherwise dying to undergo a transformation into a new physical form and a somewhat different personality. This is not entirely correct. A better phrasing might be '...regeneration is a plot device used to save the cash-cow 'Doctor Who' when William Hartnell's health began to decline in the mid 1960s.' Boru

One applies to the fictional universe, the other applies to our real universe. RE: The next Doctor Who is going to be......

I'm just waiting for 'that' scene...
Vinnie Jones: Grandfather? Jodie Whittaker: Susan?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
