Our mandate as atheists is to point out when they are "doing it wrong" as it evidences their paucity of sincerity of belief.

I don't think there is much chance of a 'slacker' type believer finding anything in the atheist's  quiver as convincing as God's Lake of Fire in Hell, as if we're worried about igniting a sudden lurch towards an Inquisition in any regard.

We need to tell them the truth, that is, this life is the only one they got and that they have much, much better things to do than to waste their precious, finite time on the non-existent.

I live in Texas, openly atheist. I have no one knocking at my door asking me if I have time to hear the "Good Word". I do have to deal with the whole voting thing, because they do vote their consciences, but I do that in the booth. I don't have anyone doing shit to me otherwise.

It would be great to get an individual to go from pious to atheist by just framing the right argument or giving that perfect refutation of some bit of dogma, but I think just chipping away at them works too.

Strange that you would take this tack when you were talking to me, and using the second-person pronoun. Perhaps if you don't want to be misunderstood, you should say what the fuck you mean instead of this abstruse horseshit.

Though I have been an atheist for many years now I was, like many, raised in the christian religion. Lately I have begun to wonder if there will be an American version of Dietrich Bonhoeffer; at least one semi-well-know christian leader who will challenge the American christians who worship and support the Der Trumpster.  Maybe the time for such has past, with virtually every flavor of christian ideology now too deeply corrupted to engender any real opposition to greed and selfishness.

And it is an open question; if such a person should step up and bring with them a sizable contingent of like minded believers, would those of us  who are already jaded when it come to anything religious be too skeptical to accept them as allies when it comes to opposing Trump and the Republican Party?

I don't give a shit about anyone's beliefs so long as they are decent.

And if they're not decent, all the other agreements in the world we might have won't get me cottoning to them.

And yet, don't people's beliefs go a long way in determining if they are decent or not? And "decent" doesn't really carry much weight in many issues. A person can be "decent" and still be anti-science, anti-facts, and anti-truth. Are they still decent when voting in people who openly trash the environment for profit because all of the "science" stuff is a left wing conspiracy?

It is an argument I struggle with because I know a lot of "decent" people who hold to ideologies that make room for a lot of evil and, at this point, am having trouble with the idea that any "decent" person could support the Republican party and its support of Donald Trump. On a purely personal basis I know them to be decent, but I don't think history is going to be so kind.

I separate my personal feelings from my political feelings. I also don't import wider issues into my opinions of individual people when at all possible.
