BROOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - As police frantically worked to figure out how his fiancée's 24-year-old daughter had vanished, a Michigan pastor who had turned to God to shed his violent past went to his flock with a request: pray for her.

But all along, authorities say, he knew the sordid truth about where the young mother was.

The pastor, ex-convict John D. White, later confessed to killing Rebekah Gay to fulfill a fantasy of necrophilia, police said Friday. White drank four or five beers before going to the woman's mobile home and repeatedly striking her head with a mallet and strangling her with a zip tie, according to court documents.

The U.S. Federal Courthouse in downtown Hammond, Ind., is less than two blocks from the sprawling campus of First Baptist Church.

At that campus, former leader Rev. Jack Schaap spent a decade performing fiery sermons about morality to the mega-church’s 15-thousand members. The congregation has a reach that stretches into other parts of Northwest Indiana, Chicago, and even beyond U.S. borders.

Last July, the married Schaap’s bully pulpit was rocked by scandal. In September he pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl; the relationship involved crossing state lines, police say.

Sometime last year, the US quietly passed a milestone demographers had long been predicting: for the first time in its history, this country is no longer majority Protestant. Fewer than 50 percent of Americans now identify as Protestant Christians of any denomination.

A little slow but perhaps Americans are finally catching up to the rest of the civilized world when it comes to jettisoning silly fairy tales.

Southern Baptist leaders in a movement that goes by names including the “New Calvinism” and “young, restless and Reformed” voiced support for a friend and colleague accused in a Maryland lawsuit of collusion in what is being called American evangelicalism's biggest sex scandal to date.

Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and Mark Dever, pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., joined Presbyterian minister Ligon Duncan in a statement of support for C.J. Mahaney, one of several defendants accused of permitting and covering up the sexual abuse of children in churches affiliated with Sovereign Grace Ministries, a Calvinist church-planting organization based in Louisville, Ky.

“We have stood beside our friend, C. J. Mahaney, and we can speak to his personal integrity,” the trio, who with Mahaney started a biennial preaching conference called Together for the Gospel in 2006, said in a statement on the T4G website.

(RNS) Citing the “serious sins” of its leader, a Texas-based ministry that promotes home schooling and “male patriarchy” has been shut down by its board.

Doug Phillips wrote on Oct. 30 that he would step down as president of Vision Forum Ministries and stop his speaking engagements after acknowledging an extramarital relationship.

His public admission proved to be a fatal blow for the ministry he headed. Vision Forum was geared for a segment of evangelical and fundamentalist Christians who profess a traditionalist understanding of Scripture, sexuality and gender roles.

“In light of the serious sins which have resulted in Doug Phillips’s resignation from Vision Forum Ministries, the Board of Directors has determined that it is in the best interests of all involved to discontinue operations,” according to a statement on the Vision Forum website.

“We have stopped receiving donations, and are working through the logistical matters associated with the closing of the ministry.”

All that means is that Catholicism in this country is growing by leaps and bounds, mainly due to Latino immigrants. Atheism is growing, too, but I'm sure not by the factor that Catholicism is.
