Inside the viral video trend that made Houston-area school children the face of Iranian propaganda
Iranian state-sponsored media and pundits have been sharing a video of Houston-area children singing a popular new religious song that includes references to Iran’s supreme leader — and mentions soldiers and martyrdom.
The video, which was removed from YouTube on Friday afternoon, showed young children and teens in traditional Islamic dress standing in a choreographed formation and singing a trending Iranian religious song in English and Farsi.
Some opponents of the Iranian government have criticized the video, especially the references it makes to child soldiers and the supreme leader of Iran. Meanwhile, news sites and pundits affiliated with the Iranian government are pointing to the Houston video as evidence of the regime’s influence in the United States.
In the video, which was posted on the Islamic Education Center of Houston’s Facebook page earlier this week, children sang in English and Farsi with lyrics that included, “Come back, reappear. I will be your soldier. I will be your supporter.”

Iran's hardline newspapers praise Salman Rushdie's attacker
Several hardline Iranian newspapers heaped praise on Saturday on the person who attacked and seriously wounded author Salman Rushdie, whose novel "The Satanic Verses" had drawn death threats from Iran since 1989.
The hardline Kayhan newspaper, whose editor-in-chief is appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, wrote:
“A thousand bravos ... to the brave and dutiful person who attacked the apostate and evil Salman Rushdie in New York," adding, “The hand of the man who tore the neck of God's enemy must be kissed”.

Turkish singer Gulsen arrested after religious schools quip
ISTANBUL, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Turkish pop star Gulsen was arrested on Thursday after an Istanbul prosecutor opened an investigation into charges of "inciting people to hatred and hostility" after a remark she made on stage about religious schools, local media reported.
The singer-songwriter, whose full name is Gulsen Colakoglu, said on Twitter she had made a joke with colleagues during an April performance and apologised to anyone offended, adding her words were seized upon by some to polarise society.
Gulsen gave a statement to Istanbul police, was transferred to a court and later arrested.
The number of Imam Hatip religious schools have risen sharply under President Tayyip Erdogan, whose ruling AK Party is rooted in political Islam and who has overturned decades-old restrictions on religion in the country, irking secularists.

A statement added that authorities “will follow up on the platform’s compliance with the directives, and in the event that the infringing content continues to be broadcast, the necessary legal measures will be taken.”
It referred to content that “violates Islamic and societal values and principles” including content “directed at children”.
While did not mention any specific content in its threat, it appears to be referencing LGBTQ+ movies and TV shows hosted by the streaming platform.

A 22-year-old Iranian woman has died days after being arrested by morality police for allegedly not complying with strict rules on head coverings.
Eyewitnesses said Mahsa Amini was beaten while inside a police van when she was picked up in Tehran on Tuesday.
Police have denied the allegations, saying Ms Amini had "suddenly suffered a heart problem".
It is the latest in a series of reports of brutality against women by authorities in Iran in recent weeks.
Ms Amini's family say that she was a healthy young woman with no medical conditions that would explain a sudden heart problem.
However, they were informed she had been taken to hospital a few hours after her arrest and the family said she had been in a coma before she died on Friday.
Tehran police said Ms Amini had been arrested for "justification and education" about the hijab, the headscarf which is mandatory for all women to wear.
Her death comes in the wake of growing reports of repressive acts against women, including those judged not to be complying with Islamic dress code being barred from entering government offices and banks.

Iranian women took off their hijabs to protest over the death of a 22-year-old woman, Mahsa Amini, who was arrested and beaten up by the police for not properly following hijab regulations.
I hope these women never wear the hijabs they are taking off today.

Viral social media videos showed women protesters removing their hijabs, a punishable crime in Iran, and chanting ‘Death to Dictator’ during the protests in Amini’s hometown Saghez.
The incident took place weeks after Ebrahim Raisi, Iran’s hardliner president, ordered stricter enforcement of the women’s dress code including wearing a hijab at all times. He also stipulated harsher punishments for the violations of the same.
Many viral videos showed protesters confronting the riot police who resorted to using tear gas on the rioters. In some videos, shots being fired can be heard at protest sites.

The Taliban has banned women from funfairs, parks and gyms in their latest crackdown on women's rights.
The group, which seized power in August 2021, has already banned girls from middle and high schools despite initial promises to the contrary, restricted women from most fields of employment and ordered them to wear head-to-toe clothing in public.
A spokesman from the Ministry of Virtue and Vice said the ban was being introduced because people were ignoring gender segregation orders and women were not wearing the required hijab, or head covering.
