Jerry Lewis, the brash slapstick comic who teamed with Dean Martin in the 1950s and later starred in “The Nutty Professor” and “The Bellboy” before launching the Muscular Dystrophy telethon, has died in Las Vegas. He was 91.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John Katsilometes reported that he died at his home at 9:15 a.m. and his agent confirmed the news.
Over the past 10 years of his life, the cranky icon’s reputation soured as he was forced to apologize for making a gay slur on camera during the 2007 telethon, continued to make racist and misogynistic jokes into his ’90s, and didn’t hesitate to share his right-wing political views.

I was just going to say the same thing.

I don't have fond memories of this one.

Before my time.

And if he was a racist, misogynistic, rightwing nut, that's probably a good thing.

lol he was a Jew.

Can't say that I liked any of his movies, although I tried. I tried because J.L. Godard loved him or was he just bullshitting? I remember when I was 8 I tried watching that movie where he trains chimps to pick olives and even at that age I thought this guy was lame.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

His popularity in France remaining inexplicable even today . . . .

Is that telethon still on? I remember that being a bone of contention with actual disabled people.

I was never a fan, though I give him props for his charitable efforts and he was good in Scorsese's The King of Comedy.

Now, if you think his films were hard to bear (they were) but want some perspective on how bad things can get, check out Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla, an unredeemable piece of garbage I saw courtesy of my bad-film-obsessed son. It's every bit as awful as the title suggests but is marginally notable in that one of the main "actors" so obviously ripped off Lewis's film persona that Lewis successfully sued the actor and the film makers.
