ESPN pulls Robert Lee

RE: ESPN pulls Robert Lee
This is a big fat meh in my book. The dude is Asian with a surname 'Lee'. They didn't need to switch it, but they did. Once they decided to do it, they should have just switched it and not made an official announcement. Maybe they did that, because it seems they made the decision last week, right after the Charlottesville Nazi Rally. Sensationalized news has a way of getting out.

I refuse to get worked up about it. If they would have kept him there, meh. Now that they've moved him, meh.

For the same reason that "statue enthusiasts" are still politically correct, CL.  We're not a nice species.

I'd never ignore Minimalist, or anyone else really. I usually read his posts if they're on the same page. They're actually pretty comical and remind me of the importance of higher education.

Bullshit. Strong condemnation in the harshest terms is what you do to intolerant people. For you to equate our cussing and blasphemy of intolerant people to a  "lack of education" is nonsense. It is perfectly appropriate to tell the KKK and Nazis to FUCK OFF.

For me, it's more about the fact that *anyone* would potentially be offended by an Asian guy who's name is Robert Lee. I just think that is absolutely assinine. I mean, Lee is an Asian name! Lol. Other than that, you are right that if it was a mutual decision between he and ESPN there is no reason for anyone to care either way.

I know if it were me, and I had the option to move, I would. I wouldn't want to give any of those assholes a chance to rally in 'my' name.

Agreed, agreed.

What a fan-fucking-tastic decision.  A man with the surname 'Lee' is sure to inflame racial tensions.  In furtherance of my support for racial equality, I hereby pledge to avoid all interaction with the actress Rachel Leigh Cook, since 'Leigh' sounds like 'Lee' and it's a safe bet that Robert E. Lee's cook was a slave.

Eedjits.

My wife's Korean name is Lee Kyung Soo. Thank goodness she was given a "proper" American name by her adoptive parents. She'd make a lousy Civil War re-enactment Confederate general.

She'd also be a lousy play-by-play announcer.

I love her Korean name in ways I can never love her American name. 'Kyung' is beautiful. I sometimes wish she'd revert to it.

This pointless aside brought to you by Crossless2.0. Carry on.

You are not getting why they did that. I don't think they needed to switch his games but it wasn't because they thought his name was offensive, they were merely being sensitive to the events that just happened. It had nothing to do with ESPN thinking his name was bad.

Sensitivity, you know, like 45 has none of.

Her point, Brian, was that there was nothing in his name to be sensitive about. I don't think there is really anything to avoid other than the perception that they intentionally chose him to be the commentator for that game because of his name. I think they could have probably shown that pretty easily.

They chose to try and avoid a situation that would have been manufactured for the sensation of it if at all.
